Going Down
Gerome Ragni Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Me and Lucifer
Lucifer and me
Just like the angel that fell
Banished forever to Hell
Today have I been expelled
From high school heaven

Elevator going down
Going down

This is my doom, my humiliation
October, not June
And it's summer vacation
Such a disgrace
How can i face the nation?
Why should this pain
Bring me such strange elation?

Emancipation proclamation
Oh Dr. Lincoln
My head needs shrinkin'
Lu lu lu lu lu lu Lucifer and me
Doomed from here
To e-ter-ni-ty!

Everybody going down down down
Going down

Forgive me if I don't cry
It's like the Fourth of July

Thank God that angels can fly
Going down down down

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Gerome Ragni's song "Going Down" describe the singer's expulsion from high school in a comical and somewhat irreverent manner. The singer identifies himself as Lucifer's companion, and likens his expulsion to being cast out of heaven, à la Milton's "Paradise Lost." The elevator, descending to hell, becomes a metaphor for the singer's descent into disgrace and humiliation.

The singer, however, seems to experience a perverse joy in his downfall, as suggested by the line "Why should this pain / Bring me such strange elation?" He also invokes the Emancipation Proclamation and references Abraham Lincoln, suggesting perhaps a connection between his own expulsion and the struggle for civil rights.

Despite the serious undertones, the song is ultimately a lighthearted and satirical take on a teenage rite of passage. The use of Lucifer and the elevator imagery especially adds a tongue-in-cheek element to the lyrics.
