Christmas Song
Gilbert O’Sullivan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm not dreaming of a white Christmas
I'm not dreaming of a white Christmas
All I'm dreaming of the whole day long
Is a peaceful world

Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year
To those of you who live in fear
And let us hope that very soon
The peace you seek will then resume

I'm not dreaming of a white Christmas
I'm not dreaming of a white Christmas
All I'm dreaming of the whole day long
Is a peaceful peaceful world

(I'm not dreaming of a white Christmas
I'm not dreaming of a white Christmas
All I'm dreaming of the whole day long
Is a peaceful world)

Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year
To those of you who live in fear
And let us hope that very soon
The peace you seek will then resume

I'm not dreaming of a white Christmas
I'm not dreaming of a white Christmas

All I'm dreaming of the whole day long
Is a peaceful peaceful world

Overall Meaning

Gilbert O'Sullivan's song "Christmas Song" is a heartfelt tribute to the desire for peace, both during the holiday season and all year long. Throughout the song, O'Sullivan emphasizes that he is not dreaming of a white Christmas, meaning he is not focused on the typical imagery of winter wonderlands and holiday festivities. Instead, his sole focus is on a peaceful world - a world free from fear, violence, and conflict. As he repeats in the chorus, all he dreams of is a peaceful world, a sentiment that he hopes his listeners share.

The lyrics are especially poignant given the context of when the song was released. The song was first released in 1974, a time when tensions were high and the world was still reeling from the Vietnam War. The song's emphasis on hope for a peaceful future would have been particularly resonant during this time.

Ultimately, "Christmas Song" is a reminder that, no matter what holiday you celebrate or what religion you follow, everyone can agree on the desire for peace and goodwill towards all. It is a universal message of hope and a call to action for all of us to work towards a brighter future.

Yes . Without doubt this is one of the greatest Christmas songs that does seem to be totally overlooked or forgotten by radio stations and the so called greatest Christmas songs on t.v.....anyway to me it will always be up there with the best of them.

@Colin623

Well this problem goes back to the mid 70s when Gilbert released a song called ' A Woman's Place' and if you are not aware of this song Gilbert wrote the following words in the song ' A woman's place in is the home' and for this he was never forgiven, so even now 46 years later he is still boycotted by many mainstream media stations ! I do believe that BBC Radio 2 is the only station that will give this song a yearly airing.

@suesullivan5631

Thank you for that information and merry Christmas to you

@Ron-wc4rj

One of the best Christmas songs

@katewild2194

A brilliant Xmas song. I play it every Xmas. I bet a lot of people have written and said things they wished they had not. There are a lot of people out there with double standards! It's a great song so the radio and TV stations should play it as lots of people want to hear it.

@stevenlloyd5033

Don't understand why this song isn't on Christmas compilation cds and played more on the radio. It's a lovely song with a simple but beautiful message.

@ianexcalibur7096

It's not on Spotify either.

@SJHUE

Yes it`s a shame. Same old songs on the compilations and the radio stations don`t tend to overthink thing`s just happy to play the same old hits year in year out. There are loads of great Christmas songs that never get a look in

@67marlins81

@@SJHUE Actually, WJMJ of Hartford, Connecticut 88.9 just played it this morning.
They usually play about one Christmas song per hour from New Year's until Epiphany.
They're a Catholic station, but play many nice older songs which mainstream radio has forgotten.

@SJHUE

@@67marlins81 Hello there, that is great news really pleased to hear that! That`s the kind of thing that will help keep this song alive. If just one person who heard it this morning downloads it, adds to their Xmas playlist, next Xmas a family member or friend hears it on that playlist, likes it, downloads it, adds to Xmas playlist etcetc Thanks for letting me know! Best wishes to you
