Get Down
Gilbert O’Sullivan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Told you once before
And I won't tell you no more
Get down, get down, get down
You're a bad dog baby
But I still want you 'round

You give me the creeps
When you jump on your feet
So get down, get down, get down
Keep your hands to yourself
I'm strictly out of bounds

Once upon a time I drank a little wine
Was as happy as could be, happy as could be
Now I'm just like a cat on a hot tin roof
Baby what do you think you're doin' to me

Told you once before
And I won't tell you no more
So get down, get down, get down
You're a bad dog baby
But I still want you 'round, around
I still want you around

I don't give a damn
And I'd like you if you can to
Get down, get down, get down

You're a bad dog baby
But I still want you 'round

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Gilbert O’Sullivan's song Get Down seem to be directed towards a person, perhaps a lover or a friend, who is misbehaving in some way. The singer has already told them once before to "get down," or to calm down and act properly, but they have not yet listened. The singer tells them again to "get down" and to "keep your hands to yourself" because they are "strictly out of bounds." It is clear that this person's behavior is making the singer uncomfortable or uneasy, evidenced by the line "you give me the creeps when you jump on your feet."

The second half of the song seems to express some frustration or confusion on the part of the singer towards this person's behavior. They reference a time in the past when they were happy, perhaps suggesting that this person's actions have disrupted that happiness. The line "Now I'm just like a cat on a hot tin roof, baby what do you think you're doin' to me" indicates that the singer is feeling restless and uncomfortable in their own skin, possibly as a result of this person's behavior.

Despite all of this, the singer still wants this person around, referring to them as a "bad dog baby" but saying that they still want them close. It is unclear why the singer feels this way or what the nature of their relationship is, but it is evident that this person's behavior is causing some tension and discomfort.

Musical Genius? Come ON!
He had some decent songs, this being one of them, but genius, no.
Bach was a musical genius, Beethoven, Mozart, were geniuses. Of you want to talk about modern comparisons being geniuses, then Maybe John Williams, maybe guys like Paul Simon, Brian Wilson and a few others. You want to talk about people like Miles Davis, Oscar Peterson etc. Gilbert O Sullivan's music is on a third grade Nursery Rhyme level of skill compared to any of the above mentioned. Some of the songs are are great but if you are one of the people that like to reserve words like genius for those that truly are, then Gilbert O Sullivan isn't one of them. Not even close.

Exactly! never given the credit he deserved, immensely talented songwriter.

@markdaly1903

@davedzone he ended up in a prolonged court battle with his ex manager.. Gordon Mills in 1982 and then later he took Biz Markle to court over a sample of Alone again naturally. He won both

Seriously catchy song. My uncle worked at the BBC for many years. He met a lot of famous people- some nice, some not so nice. He describes Gilbert O'Sullivan as a "thoroughly brilliant bloke".
