Through his labels Acid Jazz and Talkin' Loud he has been associated with the careers of countless well-known artists of the 1990s.

He is also well known as a radio DJ: starting out in pirate radio in the early eighties Gilles worked on a number of stations including Solar, and hosted jazz oriented weekend sessions at Camber Sands, and club nights at Soho's Whisky a GoGo. He found a slot on Radio London following Jazz DJ Brian Priestly and built up his name and career in London on Radio and by hosting the now legendary Talking Loud & Saying Something sessions at Camdens Dingwalls Club. He moved onto to have a radio show on London's Kiss FM dance music station, but was recruited to the BBC's youth-oriented Radio 1 in 1998. Peterson is known for his eclectic musical selections. Though not as "anything goes" as the late John Peel, he plays anything from dub and reggae through jazz, nu-jazz, soul, neo soul, R&B to drum and bass, house, broken beat, hip-hop and Jazz-funk.

He has released numerous compilations of his favourite tracks over the years reflecting his wide ranging interests including the varied but soulful 'INCredible Sound of Gilles Peterson' and the African funking 'Gilles Peterson in Africa' going back to early Talking Loud compliations of Acid and Latin Jazz.

it was 1998 ... someone gave me this double compilation CD saying "this guy is mad.. he mixes everything with everything..." As a newbie music producer back then, this compilation was gold! It opened up several new gateways of erstwhile forgotten music - so special and so peculiar. Gilles Peterson is and was great tastemaker, like a shaman perhaps.

I warmed up for Giles in Derry city in 2000. Sadly it was a small turn out, as Ireland was not ready for that level at the time. He played in Galway the next weekend and it was a better turn out. Just getting back to this mix 15 years later. Gold. Thanks for this pal ! Xxx

Much gratitude to Gilles for keeping this music alive! What a wonderful compilation -- I own it and have loved many of these since they were released and have them in my vinyl collection. I couldn't believe when I heard the cut by Sons & Daughters of Lite (precursors to Fertile Ground) -- used to rock them majorly back in the late 70's, and Alive! (all women's jazz ensemble) and thank you for including Andy Bey, Minnie Ripperton, Pharaoh Sanders and so many more... Keep 'em coming Mr. Peterson!

lol Bizarre you ask me that....i was on abit of a Gilles binge a couple of weeks back. I found myself hooked on 'Carnival Musica Brasileira Mix'..not sure if its this you're referring to but I love the fact that this guy finds obscure tracks in any given year n across ALL genres. If you put the first CD in and then manually rewind it, there is a hidden track. It's Earl Zinger's INCREDIBLE Saturday Morning Rush. It has been slightly changed, so he is running around record shops in Soho trying to find Gilles Peterson's INCredible album, not DJ Skitz latest 12"...

Very lovely indeed! The repetitive images drive me bonkers though, if I switch off the tv the sound is out so no escape. Brazilian thongs, I’ve seen it too much, stick with the owl album image of Gilles😁 minor niggles really because of a superb mix, thanks.
