Often collaborating with lyricist Pete Bellotte, Moroder scored a number of hits in his own name including "Son Of My Father" in 1972 and "From Here to Eternity" in 1977 under the name Giorgio, and in the following year releasing "Chase", the theme from the film Midnight Express and sold well elsewhere. All were hits in the UK. The full movie score for Midnight Express won him his first Academy Award for best film score in 1978.
In 1985, Moroder worked with Phil Oakey, frontman of the popular synthpop group, The Human League, to make the album Philip Oakey & Giorgio Moroder. The following year, Moroder collaborated with his protege Harold Faltermeyer (of "Axel F." fame) and lyricist Tom Whitlock to create the score for the popular film Top Gun (1986), with the most noteworthy hit being the Berlin classic, "Take My Breath Away", which went on to become a huge hit for the group.
He also scored other popular films in the 1980s including American Gigolo, Flashdance, The NeverEnding Story, Thief of Hearts, Electric Dreams, Scarface and Cat People(in collaboration with David Bowie). The latter score has recently regained popularity due to its use in the popular computer game Grand Theft Auto III. Moroder's "From Here To Eternity" and "The Chase" were also used in the Sony PSP game Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories.
In 1984, Moroder compiled a new restoration and edit of the famous silent film Metropolis and provided a new modern rock-and-roll soundtrack to the film.
His song "Tears" was sampled and used as the basis of the DJ Shadow song "Organ Donor" on his 1996 album Endtroducing......
On September 20, 2004 Moroder was honored at the Dance Music Hall of Fame ceremony, held in New York, when he was inducted for his many outstanding achievements and contributions as producer. In 2005, he was given the title of Commendatore by Azeglio Ciampi.
In 2005, a great deal of his work (including the Cizeta-Moroder supercar he co-produced in the mid 90s with Claudio Zampolli) was used in the video game Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, and was the entire playlist of the Flashback FM radio station.
Giorgio Moroder is one of the numerous composers interested in writing the theme tune of the 2008 Bejing Olympic Games. This is not the first theme song Moroder composed for the Olympic games. "Hand in Hand" was regarded as the best ever Olympic theme song for the 1988 Seoul Olympics by former International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Juan Antonio Samaranch.
Moroder contributed to Daft Punk's 2013 studio album Random Access Memories, admitting that he had been a fan of their song "One More Time" before working with the group. His voice and story is featured on the album's track "Giorgio by Moroder". On the track he states, "My name is Giovanni Giorgio, but everybody calls me Giorgio."

Da da da da da da da da
Da da da da, da da da da
Da da da da da da da da
Da da da da, da da da da
Da da da da da da da da
I am sitting in the morning
I am waiting at the counter
For the man to pour the coffee
And he fills it only halfway
And before I even argue
He is looking out the window
At somebody coming in
Da da da da, da da da da
Da da da da da da da da
Da da da da, da da da da
Da da da da da da da da
Da da da da, da da da da
Da da da da da da da da
Da da da da, da da da da
Da da da da da da da da
"It is always nice to see you,"
Says the man behind the counter
To the woman who has come in
She is shaking her umbrella
And I look the other way
As they are kissing their hellos
And I'm pretending not to see them
Instead, I pour the milk
Da da da da, da da da da
Da da da da da da da da
Da da da da, da da da da
Da da da da da da da da
Da da da da, da da da da
Da da da da da da da da
Da da da da, da da da da
Da da da da da da da da
Everybody's welcome
Come on, come on in
Sit yourself down
The fun it never ends
Love is the drug
That makes you want to drink
'Til the morning after
I open up the paper
There's a story of an actor
Who had died while he was drinking
It was no one I had heard of
And I'm turning to the horoscope
Looking for the funnies
When I'm feeling someone watching me
And so I raise my head
(And so I raise my head)
(And so I raise my head)
Da da da da, da da da da
Da da da da da da da da
Da da da da, da da da da
Da da da da da da da da
Da da da da, da da da da
Da da da da da da da da
Da da da da, da da da da

Giorgio Moroder's song "Tom" is a reflective and melancholic piece that highlights the mundanity and loneliness of everyday life. The beginning of the song sees Tom sitting in a diner, waiting for his coffee to be poured. The man behind the counter only fills it halfway and looks away, letting Tom stew in his annoyance. However, the atmosphere shifts when a woman enters and is greeted warmly by the man behind the counter. Tom notices them intimately greeting each other, and instead of feeling happiness for them, he pretends not to see and pours his milk. The song switches to a chorus that invites anyone and everyone to join in and enjoy life, but this is revealed to be a reflection of Tom's loneliness as the song progresses.
Tom opens up the paper, but instead of reading the news, he turns to the horoscope and the funnies. He's trying to find some escape from his mundane life, but he feels watched. This could be interpreted as his own conscience, reminding him of the opportunities he's missed or his own loneliness exposed. The song ends abruptly, leaving us to ponder Tom's life and whether or not he'll turn things around.
The song is an atmospheric and emotional piece that explores the human condition in a way that is relatable for many listeners. It speaks to the loneliness that we all feel at times and offers a glimmer of hope that things can get better. The repeated chorus offers a place of welcome and kindness that is missing from Tom's life, and perhaps offers an invitation to listeners to reach out and connect with others.

Tom’s Diner
Giorgio Moroder
Estou sentado de manhã
I am sitting in the morning
Na lanchonete da esquina
At the diner on the corner
Estou esperando no balcão
I am waiting at the counter
Para o homem derramar o café
For the man to pour the coffee
E ele enche apenas na metade
And he fills it only halfway
E antes mesmo de discutir
And before I even argue
Ele está olhando pela janela
He is looking out the window
Em alguém chegando
At somebody coming in
É sempre bom ver você
It is always nice to see you
Diz o homem atrás do balcão
Says the man behind the counter
Para a mulher que veio em
To the woman who has come in
Ela está sacudindo o guarda-chuva
She is shaking her umbrella
E eu olho para o outro lado
And I look the other way
Como eles estão beijando seus hellos
As they are kissing their hellos
Eu estou fingindo não vê-los
I'm pretending not to see them
Em vez disso, eu despejo o leite
Instead, I pour the milk
Todos são bem vindos
Everybody's welcome
Vamos lá, vamos lá
Come on, come on in
Sente-se
Sit yourself down
Os funnies nunca acabam
The funnies never end
Amor é a droga
Love is the drug
Isso faz você querer beber
That makes you want to drink
Até a manhã seguinte, oh
Till the morning after, oh
Eu abro o papel
I open up the paper
Há uma história de um ator
There's a story of an actor
Quem morreu enquanto bebia
Who had died while he was drinking
Não era ninguém que eu tinha ouvido falar
It was no one I had heard of
E estou me voltando para o horóscopo
And I'm turning to the horoscope
Procurando as funnies
Looking for the funnies
Quando estou sentindo alguém me observando
When I'm feeling someone watching me
E então eu levanto minha cabeça
And so I raise my head

Can't believe Britney's team hasn't shot a video for this masterpiece. They really missed such an opportunity, it could've been a massive hit.
@TheResilient5689
Although you could argue that this lyric video is already pretty dope in itself. It’s her voice that really sells this song, after all!
