Poi all'improvviso uscì una lacrima,
E lui credette di affogare
Te voglio bene assaje,

These lyrics are from the song "Caruso" by Italian singer-songwriter Lucio Dalla. The song tells a story of love and loss through the perspective of the singer, Caruso, who finds solace in music. The lyrics begin with a description of a picturesque scene by the sea, where a man embraces a crying girl on an old terrace overlooking the Gulf of Sorrento. As he clears his throat, he starts singing again, expressing his deep love for the girl.
The singer reminisces about the lights in the sea, which remind him of nights in America. However, these lights are revealed to be just the lamps on a boat's propeller wash. As he plays the piano, he feels the pain in the music and abruptly leaves when he sees the moon emerge from a cloud, finding even death sweeter. He gazes into the girl's eyes, which are described as green as the sea, but when she sheds a tear, he believes he is drowning.

Qui dove il mare luccica,

E tira forte il vento
And the wind blows strong

Un uomo abbraccia una ragazza,
A man embraces a girl
Dopo che aveva pianto
After she had cried
Poi si schiarisce la voce,
Then his voice clears
E ricomincia il canto.
And he starts to sing again
Te voglio bene assaje,
I love you so much
Ma tanto tanto bene sai
But you know, so much, so much
è una catena ormai,
It's a chain now
That melts the blood in the veins, you know.
