Stabat Mater dolorosa
The sorrowful Mother was standing

Juxta crucem lacrimosa
Weeping beside the cross

dum pendebat Filius.
As her Son was hanging there.

Cuius animam gementem,
Her grieving soul

contristatam et dolentem,
Sad and anguished,

pertransivit gladius.
Was pierced with a sword.

O quam tristis et afflicta
Oh, how sad and afflicted

fuit illa benedicta
Was that blessed one

Mater Unigeniti.
The Mother of the Only Begotten.

Quæ mœrebat et dolebat,
She mourned and grieved

Pia Mater cum videbat
As she watched

Nati pœnas incliti.
The famous sufferings of her Son.

Quis est homo qui non fleret,
Who is the man who would not weep

Matrem Christi si videret
If he saw Christ's Mother

in tanto supplicio?
In such agony?

Quis non posset contristari,
Who could not be saddened

Christi Matrem contemplari
To contemplate Christ's Mother

dolentem cum Filio?
Suffering with her Son?

Pro peccatis suæ gentis
For the sins of his people

vidit Iesum in tormentis
He saw Jesus in torment

et flagellis subditum.
And subjected to whipping.

Vidit suum dulcem natum
She saw her sweet child

morientem desolatum,
Dying and abandoned,

dum emisit spiritum.
As he released his spirit.

Eia Mater, fons amoris,
O Mother, fount of love

me sentire vim doloris
Make me feel the power of sorrow

fac, ut tecum lugeam.
So that I may mourn with you.

Fac ut ardeat cor meum
Make my heart burn

in amando Christum Deum,
With the love of Christ God,

ut sibi complaceam.
So that I may please Him.

Sancta Mater, istud agas,
Holy Mother, please do this

Crucifixi fige plagas
Fasten the wounds of the Crucified

cordi meo valide.
In my heart firmly.

Tui nati vulnerati,
Your wounded Son

tam dignati pro me pati,
So worthy to suffer for me,

pœnas mecum divide.
Share your sufferings with me.

Fac me tecum pie flere,
Let me weep piously with you

Crucifixo condolere,
To grieve with the Crucified,

donec ego vixero.
Until I die.

Iuxta crucem tecum stare,
To stand beside the cross with you,

et me tibi sociare
And to be joined to you

in planctu desidero.
In mourning I desire.

Virgo virginum præclara,
Virgin of virgins most distinguished,

mihi iam non sis amara:
Don't be harsh to me

fac me tecum plangere.
Let me weep with you.

Fac ut portem Christi mortem,
Help me to bear Christ's death,

passionis fac consortem,
To be a partner in his passion,

et plagas recolere.
And to remember His wounds.

Fac me plagis vulnerari,
Wound me with His wounds,

fac me cruce inebriari,
Intoxicate me with the cross,

et cruore Filii.
And with the blood of your Son.

Flammis ne urar succensus
Lest I be consumed by flames

per te Virgo, sim defensus
By you, O Virgin, be my defender

in die judicii
On the Day of Judgment.

Christe, cum sit hinc exire,
Christ, when it is time for me to depart from here,

da per Matrem me venire
Grant that through your Mother I may come

ad palmam victoriae.
To the palm of victory.

Quando corpus morietur,
When my body dies,

fac ut animæ donetur
Grant that my soul may be given

Paradisi gloria.
Into the glory of paradise.
