The cast is second behind The Beatles for most chart appearances by a group act in the Billboard Hot 100's history, and holds the record of sixth overall among all artists, with sixty-nine appearances. The cast has sold over thirty six million and over eleven million albums worldwide. The series' cover versions have also had a positive effect on the original recording artists, with sales of Rihanna's "Take a Bow" increasing by 189 percent after the song was covered in the Glee episode "Showmance".
The series features covers of numerous songs sung on-screen by the characters. Musical segments typically take the form of performances, as opposed to the characters singing spontaneously, as the intention is for the series to remain reality-based. Murphy is responsible for selecting all of the songs used, and strives to maintain a balance between show tunes and chart hits, as: "I want there to be something for everybody in every episode. That's a tricky mix, but that's very important — the balancing of that." Song choices are integral to script development, with Murphy explaining: "Each episode has a theme at its core. After I write the script, I will choose songs that help to move the story along."
Glee is choreographed by Zach Woodlee, and features five to eight production numbers per episode. Once music rights are cleared, songs are arranged and pre-recorded by the cast. Woodlee constructs the accompanying dance moves, which are then taught to the cast and filmed. Numbers can take several weeks to prepare, depending on complexity. Each episode costs at least $3 million to produce, and can take up to 10 days to film as a result of the elaborate choreography.
Just Give Me a Reason
Glee Cast Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You were a thief, you stole my heart
And I your willing victim
I let you see the parts of me
That weren't all that pretty
And with every touch you fixed them
Now you've been talking in your sleep, oh, oh
Tell me that you've had enough
Of our love, our love
Just give me a reason
Just a little bit's enough
Just a second we're not broken, just bent
And we can learn to love again
It's in the stars
It's been written in the scars on our hearts
We're not broken, just bent
And we can learn to love again
Puck (Quinn):
I'm sorry I don't understand
Where all of this is coming from
I thought that we were fine (Oh, we had everything)
Your head is running wild again
My dear we still have everythin'
And it's all in your mind (Yeah, but this is happenin')
You've been havin' real bad dreams, oh, oh
You used to lie so close to me, oh, oh
Puck and Quinn:
There's nothing more than empty sheets
Between our love, our love
(Puck: Oh) Our love, our love (Quinn: Love)
Just give me a reason
Just a little bit's enough
Just a second we're not broken, just bent
And we can learn to love again
I never stopped
You're still written in the scars on my heart
You're not broken, just bent
And we can learn to love again
Oh, tear ducts and rust
I'll fix it for us
Puck and Quinn:
We're collecting dust
But our love's enough
You're holding it in
You're pouring a drink
No nothing is
Puck and Quinn:
As bad as it seems
We'll come clean
Just give me a reason
Just a little bit's enough
Just a second
Quinn and Puck:
We're not broken, just bent
And we can learn to love again
It's in the stars
It's been written in the scars on our hearts
Puck and Quinn:
(Puck: That) We're not broken, just bent
And we can learn to love again
Give me a reason
Puck and Quinn:
Just a little bit's enough
Just a second we're not broken, just bent
And we can learn to love again
It's in the stars
It's still written in the scars on our hearts
That we're not broken, just bent
And we can learn to love again
(Quinn: Oh) We can learn to love again
(Puck: Oh) We can learn to love again
Oh, oh, (Puck: That) we're not broken, just bent
And we can learn to love again
Mm, mm, mm, ahh
The song begins with the singer reminiscing about the past and how she willingly fell in love with someone who eventually hurt her. She allowed this person to see the parts of her that were not perfect, hoping that they could be fixed with their touch. However, as time passed, she noticed that her partner was behaving differently and started talking in their sleep, saying things they never said to her when they were awake. This causes her to question their love and whether it is worthwhile to continue trying to make it work. She asks for a reason, just a little bit of hope to hold onto, to try and fix their love, which she believes is only bent and not completely broken.
In the second verse, the partner is confused and does not understand where the singer's doubts are coming from, believing that they have everything they need to make their relationship work. However, the singer reveals that her partner has been having bad dreams and that they have been pulling away from her. Despite this, the singer still believes that their love can be fixed and wants her partner to just give her a reason to keep fighting for their love.
The chorus repeats throughout the song, emphasizing the need for just a little bit of hope to keep the love alive. The bridge consists of Puck and Quinn reassuring each other that their love is still there, even if it feels like they are collecting dust. They believe that nothing is as bad as it seems and that they can confess their feelings to each other and learn to love again.
Overall, the song tells the story of a couple going through a rough patch but still wanting to fight for their love. It explores the need for communication and honesty in relationships and the belief that love can be fixed even when it seems like it is beyond repair.
