Turning Tables
Glee Cast (Feat. Gwyneth Paltrow) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Close enough to start a war,
All that I have is on the floor,
God only knows what we're fighting for,
All that I say, you always say more,
I can't keep up with your turning tables,
Under your thumb, I can't breathe,

So I won't let you close enough to hurt me,
No, I won't ask you, you to just desert me,
I cant give you what you think you gave me,
It's time to say goodbye to turning tables,
To turning tables,

Under haunted skies I see you, ooh,
Where love is lost, your ghost is found,
I braved a hundred storms to leave you,
As hard as you try, no,
I will never be knocked down,
I can't keep up with your turning tables,
Under your thumb, I can't breathe,

So I won't let you close enough to hurt me,

No, I won't ask you, you to just desert me,
I cant give you what you think you gave me,
It's time to say goodbye to turning tables,
Turning tables,

Next time I'll be braver,
I'll be my own savior,
When the thunder calls for me,
Next time I'll be braver,
I'll be my own savior,
Standing on my own two feet,

I won't let you close enough to hurt me,
No, I won't ask you, you to just desert me,
I can't give you what you think you gave me,
It's time to say goodbye to turning tables,
To turning tables,

Turning tables, yeah,
Turning, oh.

Overall Meaning

The song Turning Tables can be interpreted as a relationship that has become stagnant, with both parties unable to communicate effectively and constantly fighting. The lyrics "Close enough to start a war, All that I have is on the floor" could suggest that they have reached breaking point, with nothing left to give. Yet, they continue to try and make the relationship work, despite being unable to keep up with each other's changing emotions ("I can't keep up with your turning tables, Under your thumb, I can't breathe").

The chorus of the song is a declaration of independence, with the singer refusing to let their partner hurt them any longer ("So I won't let you close enough to hurt me, No, I won't ask you, you to just desert me"). They recognize that they cannot continue to give what their partner expects of them ("I cant give you what you think you gave me"), and it is time to let go of the constant back and forth ("It's time to say goodbye to turning tables").

The verses are emotionally charged, with the singer describing the haunting memories of their partner, and the strength they have gained in leaving them ("Under haunted skies I see you, ooh, Where love is lost, your ghost is found, I braved a hundred storms to leave you, As hard as you try, no, I will never be knocked down"). The final verse is a recognition of their own worth, and the promise to be stronger in the future ("Next time I'll be braver, I'll be my own savior, Standing on my own two feet").

I like this version more. Not because Gwyneth is more talented than Adele, it's that I like how her voice sounds in this version, it sounds soothing. But everyone is entitled to what he/she prefers.
