During the late 1920s and early 1930s, Miller managed to earn a living working as a freelance trombonist in several bands. His first band was formed in 1937 but failed to distinguish itself and eventually broke up.
Following the break-up of his first band, Miller realized that he needed to develop a unique sound, and decided to make the clarinet play a melodic line with a tenor saxophone on the same note, while three other saxophones harmonized. With this sound combination, the Miller band that became the most popular was born in 1938. After a shaky start, it made his new band a nationwide hit.
In 1942, Miller joined the United States Army Air Forces where he continued his musical career with the Army Air Force Band.
On December 15, 1944, Miller was to fly from the United Kingdom to Paris, France, to play for the soldiers who had recently liberated Paris. His plane departed from RAF Twinwood Farm in Clapham, Bedfordshire and disappeared while flying over the English Channel. No trace of the aircrew, passengers or plane has ever been found. Miller's status is missing in action.
His music is still iconic of the time period in which he lived and continues to draw thousands of fans of all age groups.
Glenn Miller was a popular visitor to Bedford and its American Air force bases. He is still remembered to this day by the people of Bedford with a bronze bust displayed on the front of the towns Corn Exchange, and more recently, what remains of the Twinwoods Airfield being renovated as a Glenn Miller Museum and outdoor event site

When the jungle shadows fall
Like the tick, tick, tock of the stately clock
As it stands against the wall
Like the drip, drip, drip of the raindrops
When the summer show'are is through
So a voice within me keeps repeating
You, you, you.
Night and day
You are the one
Only you beneath the moon
And under the sun
Whether near to me or far
No matter, darling Where you are
I think of you
Night and day
Day and night
Why it is so
That this longing for you
Follows wherever I go.
In the roarin' traffic's boom
In the silence of my lonely room
I think of you
Night and day
Night and day
Under the hide of me
There's an oh such a hungry
Yearnin' burnin' inside of me
And its torment won't be through
'Til you let me spend my life
Making love to you
Day and night
Night and day
In Glenn Miller's classic song Night and Day, the singer expresses his intense feelings towards the object of his affection. In the opening lines, he compares the sound of jungle drums and the ticking of a clock to the constant, repetitive voice in his head that repeats "You, you, you." These sounds represent the consistent beating of his heart, and the longing he feels for his love, whether he is near or far. The second verse reveals that this desire never fades, as he thinks of his love "in the roarin' traffic's boom, in the silence of my lonely room."
The chorus emphatically declares that his love is the only one for him, whether in the light of day or the darkness of night. He yearns for the chance to be with her, as his burning desire will not be calmed until they can spend their lives together. The lyrics are a testament to the power of love and desire, and the consuming effect it can have on the human heart.
