Growing up, Stafford studied classical music, from which he gets a lot of his inspiration. Stafford's background lies in contemporary and progressive rock. He was initially hired by Blizzard on a one-week trial basis. He spent that first week stationed in Mike Morhaime's office, porting music and sound effects for the PC version of The Lost Vikings. He later created the music for various games in the Warcraft franchise, including Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness and Warcraft II: Beyond the Dark Portal, Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne and World of Warcraft as well as several of its expansion packs.

@@rottenpoet6675 You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about, and your condescending attitude is why no one thumbed up your post. As for myself, I am an actual session musician and recording engineer who does know what he is talking about.
There is a big country-music influence in this tune, as well as the metal genre (found in the midi drums, midi bass, and midi electric guitar). It involves a acoustic guitar behind an acoustic with Nashville tuning (sounds like a 12 string) giving off a certain "twang" which replicates American old-school country-music pedal steel licks. Just listen to the intro.
When I am talking about "pedal steel country twang" I am referring to country portamento (pitch bending) sounds such as this. https://youtu.be/5YdHqxTcBfI
The bending portamento between the acoustic chords is what makes this "cowboy" or "country" or "farmer" or whatever people want to call it. But it is exactly that. American Country (or "cowboy" as some called it) influenced.
Why I know this? Other than the fact that I am involved in a modern reproduction of this exact tune as we speak, I have been a musician for over 20 years.

You know whats kind of interesting? Its almost as if Blizzard had this dark atmospheric approach to their games late 90's that did not transfer over AT ALL to the 2000's. Its not just Starcraft and Diablo, but it can also be seen in the background and lore that culminated in the dark story of WC3.
But what happened as we moved into the 21st century? First WoW, not exactly a "light-hearted" game by any measure (at least at first), but eventually it seemed to become that way.
And Diablo and StarCraft... well we all know how that went, just like you said its as if they lost what made them gritty and dark in the late 20th century, like they lost a chunk of their soul. While WoW felt like a gradual, almost unnoticeable, transition of the franchise, Diablo and StarCraft were hit HARD by this atmospheric change.
I wonder if it will be possible for Blizzard to salvage this, to eventually return to the roots of these franchises to figure out what made them so unique and loved rather than the cash grabs they are today in a desperate attempt to appeal to a much wider audience...
