1) Gojira is a metal band from Bayonne, France. Their lyrics focus on life, ecology, and spiritual themes. They were formed in 1996 by brothers Joe Duplantier (vocals and lead guitar) and Mario Duplantier (drums), Christian Andreu (guitar) and Alexandre Cornillon (bass guitar). Cornillon left the band in 2001 and Jean-Michel Labadie became their bass player. Genres that they have been associated with over their career include death metal, progressive metal, thrash metal and groove metal.
They had initially named their group Godzilla, but due to legal constraints had to change their name. They therefore chose to re-name their band Gojira - the original Japanese version of their name (in Japanese Gojira means gorilla-whale or gorilla the size of a whale). Some of the content of their music is focused on the ecological effects of human activity on the Earth.
Joe and Mario Duplantier also play in an experimental metal band called Empalot.
In 2007 Joe also became the bass player for former Sepultura members Max and Igor's new project, Cavalera Conspiracy.
2) Canadian powerviolence band existing from 1996-1998 based in Toronto, Ontario.
Pain Is a Master
Gojira Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
All my life starting over, blood spilled inside out
I went through this cycle of pain deep in myself
Destroyed by awful hands, a demon of illusion
The pain now awaken, I'm cracking wide open
Can barely recognize my body, a battlefield
Unquestioned pride once so fragile
I cannot even recall names or faces
My side
I am nothing the pain awake is forging me
Face down, inert
Forcing me, dreams haunting me
I am immense, I am awake, renewed
Lost in the darkest time
I know I felt their presence
Even if I was blind
Pain, please forgive my ignorance
My master
The song Pain Is a Master by Gojira talks about the cycle of pain and how it can awaken us and change us completely. The first verse talks about crawling and moaning in the sharp blade of grass, which could metaphorically represent being stuck in a difficult situation. The lyrics also suggest that the pain is not just physical but also emotional as the singer has to start over again and again after being destroyed by awful hands. This cycle of pain is something that the singer goes through deep within themselves, causing them to crack wide open and feel like they are nothing.
In the second verse, the singer acknowledges that the pain has awakened something in them and has forged them anew. They feel immense and renewed, even though they were lost in the darkest time. The lyrics suggest that even though the singer couldn't see their supporters during this difficult time, they knew that they were present. Towards the end of the lyrics, the singer appears to ask for forgiveness from the pain, referring to it as their master.
Overall, the song seems to be about accepting pain as something that can awaken and change us. It also speaks to the difficult nature of pain and how it can make us feel lost and alone, but it also acknowledges the presence of supporters even during the darkest times.
