Song Of A Devils Servant
Golden Earring Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Call my name and I'll be there
To serve your majesty everywhere
No instruction is too much for me
Execute his order, like in a bad dream
Ah, ah, ah,.........

There's no use to run and hide
For his eyes are open wide
And when he finds you
Those eyes will burn into your soul

I sold my life, without thinkin' twice
But instead of fortune he gave me lies
I'm facing hell to eternity

The only way out is suicide for me
Ah, ah, ah,....................

Overall Meaning

"Song Of A Devil's Servant" by Golden Earring is a song that tells the story of a person who has made a pact with the devil. The opening lines of the song suggest that the singer is a willing servant of the devil, willing to do his bidding, and carry out his orders anywhere and everywhere. The singer seems to have no qualms about following the devil's instructions, no matter how horrific or evil they may be.

The second stanza of the song suggests that the devil is always watching and that there is no escape from him. The singer has sold their life to the devil and is now facing the consequences of their actions. Rather than finding fortune, they have been given lies, and find themselves facing hell for eternity. The only way out appears to be suicide, a grim reminder of the high price that comes with making a deal with the devil.

"Song Of A Devil's Servant" is a haunting reminder of the dangers of making a deal with the devil. It shows how easy it can be to fall into temptation and how difficult it can be to escape the consequences. The lyrics are powerful and evocative, painting a picture of a tragic life lived in service to an evil force.

And there lies the problem, people who only know the band for just those two songs, never seem open to explore whatever else they did and in doing so miss out on so much good music. So here's a list of songs of theirs you should check out.
- Daddy buy me a girl. (Shows them at their most Beatles-Like)
- The sound of the screaming day (Again, VERY sixties)
- Back Home (The Band finding its sound)
- Buddy Joe
- She flies on strange wings
- Kill me Ce Soir
- Long Blond animal
- Quiet eyes

Man this is so wunderbar. Yet a third version of this song, different than the other two recorded versions. Rinus on keys, so no bass. A True gem. Do not let this one disappear ☝️

What a long lost treasure!!! Simply AWESOME!!! Makes me wonder how much more of this Golden Earring Beat Club material is still in the vaults!

crossroader71

One of the best heavy rock/prog bands between 1969-1973!

This is my favourite Golden Earring song. I never thought I'd find live footage of it on YT. It deviates a bit from the studio recording, but the last 4 and a bit minutes are true to the record. The song was too long to be released as a single, otherwise it may have been their first worldwide hit. Rinus Gerritsen is one of my favourite bass players, but here he demonstrates that he is competent on keyboards as well.

Ivan May

I like the flute playing from Barry Hay, it is extremely ambient sounding.
