Before they were signed to a major label, they released an EP titled Richter. Many of the songs on Richter are demo versions of songs on their full length debut, Goldfinger, which was released in 1996. Their biggest single was "Here in Your Bedroom", though they also gained recognition from their song Superman, which was featured in the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater (1) video game. (Their song "Spokesman" was also included in the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 video game) Though their second album, Hang-Ups, was less successful, the band still maintained a devoted fanbase in the hardcore community. Their third studio LP was Stomping Ground, which sold poorly in the US but was a modest hit in some European countries, thanks to their cover of Nena's "99 Red Balloons" sung partly in German. 99 Red Balloons was also featured in Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec, as well as the movie Eurotrip. Their next album, Open Your Eyes (2002), was the first for their new record label, Jive/Zomba.
Frontman John Feldmann has produced records for Mest, The Used (whose vocalist Bert McCracken sang some guest vocals on 'Open Your Eyes' and 'Ocean Size') and Story of the Year. He also produced Good Charlotte's single "The Anthem" (whose guitarist Benji Madden provides guest vocals on 'January'), which was originally named "Oracle of Elcaro". He also signed the band Unloco with Maverick Records. In early 2005, they released their first album for their new label, titled "Disconnection Notice". It featured the single "Wasted".
Former band members include bassist Simon Williams, who left the band following Hang-Ups (replaced by Kelly Lemieux), and Brian Arthur, who left the band following Disconnection Notice.

You Think It's A Joke
Goldfinger Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Why I should laugh at you.
You think its a joke to take advantage
Of the life that supports you.
Push and push. suppress the weaker ones
You find two words, with emotions you are numb.
You think the world revolves around the things you buy.
I think of loneliness that you will die.
I want to defend defenseless, let the meek inherit the earth.
And your intelligence give you nothing to mask your ignorance.
If there's a God above to judge what's right and wrong.
Your careless attitude will soon be gone.
You thinks its a joke, I find no reason,
Why i should laugh at you.
You think its a joke to take advantage
Of the life that supports you.
You think its a joke
You think its a joke
I want to defend defenseless, let the meek inherit the earth.
And your intelligence give you nothing to mask your ignorance.
If there's a God above to judge what's right and wrong.
Your careless attitude will soon be gone.
You think the world revolves around the things you buy.
I think of loneliness that you will die. you will
You thinks its a joke, I find no reason,
Why I should laugh at you.
You think its a joke to take advantage
Of the life that supports you.
Cause I find no reason.
Why I should laugh at you.
You think its a joke!
The song "You Think It's a Joke" by Goldfinger is a powerful criticism of those who take their privileged lives for granted and act as if the world revolves around them. The lyrics express the frustration and anger of someone who sees others constantly pushing down the weaker ones while remaining emotionally numb. The singer questions why he should laugh at such people who take advantage of the very life that supports them. He talks about defending the defenseless and letting the meek inherit the earth, while reminding the listener that their intelligence gives them nothing to mask their ignorance.
The song emphasizes on the idea that if there's a God above who judges right and wrong, then the careless attitude of such people will soon be gone. They think that the world revolves around the things they buy, but the singer sees the loneliness that awaits them when they die. The repetition of the phrase "you think it's a joke" drives home the message that society must stop trivializing important issues like poverty and social inequality.
The song is a call for change and for people to start taking responsibility for their actions. The powerful lyrics seek to awaken society to the problems that lie within and motivate people to address them. It is a reminder that everyone is a part of society, and everyone has a duty to make it a better place.
