Gomez completed an inaugural U.S. tour opening for Eagle-Eye Cherry in October 1998, while the press still offered praise (Spin magazine called Bring It On "a damn beautiful album," giving it an eight out of ten rating). Liquid Skin followed one year later and went platinum in England, and the rarities/B-sides compilation Abandoned Shopping Trolley Hotline appeared in 2000. A third studio album, In Our Gun, was released in spring 2002. Another hiatus saw Ian Ball relocating to Los Angeles while still working with the band at its new studio in Portslade, England. The dozens of tracks recorded during this time were whittled down and fashioned into Split the Difference, released in May of 2004. By that time, Hut, the group's original label, had gone under, leaving Gomez signed to Virgin (Hut's distributor). Despite all the critical acclaim, the band's album sales never seemed to match Virgin's expectations, and the two sides parted ways later that year.
In 2005, Gomez signed with ATO Records and released Out West, the group's first live album. How We Operate arrived in May 2006, and the band rounded out the year by assembling a retrospective collection of singles, rarities, and unreleased tracks entitled Five Men in a Hut: Singles 1998-2004. Gomez's members were spread across two continents by this point, leading to a three-year gap between How We Operate and the band's sixth studio release, A New Tide, parts of which were recorded individually by the various bandmates and then merged online. Ben Ottewell took some time after its release to launch a solo career, with 2011's Shapes & Shadows marking his first major release outside of the band. Months later, the band released another studio album, Whatever's on Your Mind, with Phantom Planet's Sam Farrar sharing production duties with the bandmates themselves.

Come one and all
One and all
If your one the people right there right then
You bet a ladies dead and they're appalled
They're appalled
Come into my palace
Come and see my hollow walls
It's gonna be a blue moon rising
Rising one and all
Some people like that
Your gonna get them with your money
All the chimes get polished bald
And I recall
When I get like a tweedle dee or a tweedle dumb
Plus his sales pitch ain't an equal sum
Ain't gonna be fun
Come into my dream world
A simple smile not a loaded gun
She's a shining sun
It's gonna be a blue moon rising
Rising one and all
One and all
Some people like that
Some people like that
Some people like that
Something like jerking in the moon ligh
There's something like jerking in the moon light
There's something like jerking in the moon light
There's something like jerking in the moon light
It's gonna be a blue moon rising
Rising one and all
One and all
It's gonna be a blue moon rising
Rising one and all
Some people like that
Some people like that
Some people like that
Some people like that
The opening lines of "Blue Moon Rising" by Gomez beckons people to come join in on the fun. The lyrics "Come on all my people / Come one and all / One and all" sets the tone for an invitation to a big celebration. The next lines "If your one the people right there right then / You bet a ladies dead and they're appalled / They're appalled" may seem a bit vague and mysterious, but it could be interpreted as the singer inviting those who are ready to party and leave behind the judgment of those who do not understand their lifestyle. The mention of a lady being "dead" and "appalled" may imply that she is too uptight or conservative and cannot handle a wild night out.
As the lyrics continue, Gomez paints a picture of their palace with its "hollow walls" and "crawling servants." The singers invite people to their dream world where a "simple smile not a loaded gun" is all that is needed to fit in. The imagery of a palace, servants, and a dream world suggests that the singers are living in a fantasy world, perhaps a stark contrast to the real world filled with difficulties and problems. The repeated chorus of "It's gonna be a blue moon rising / Rising one and all" adds to the idea of a once-in-a-blue-moon kind of celebration, where everybody can come together and have a good time.
Overall, "Blue Moon Rising" by Gomez speaks to the human mindset of desiring escape and freedom from the trials and tribulations of everyday life. The party setting and the invitation to the "dream world" highlight the need for people to take a break from their chaotic reality and come together to enjoy themselves. The song also touches on acceptance, as the singers encourage people to join in on the fun regardless of their status or background.
