Iris
GooGoo Dolls Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And I'd give up forever to touch you
'Cause I know that you feel me somehow
You're the closest to heaven that I'll ever be
And I don't want to go home right now
And all I can taste is this moment
And all I can breathe is your life
'Cause sooner or later it's over
I just don't want to miss you tonight

And I don't want the world to see me
'Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am

And you can't fight the tears that ain't coming
Or the moment of truth in your lies
When everything feels like the movies
And you bleed just to know you're alive

And I don't want the world to see me
'Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am

And I don't want the world to see me
'Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am

And I don't want the world to see me
'Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am

I just want you to know who I am

I just want you to know who I am
I just want you to know who I am

Overall Meaning

The Goo Goo Dolls’ “Iris” is a song about a person who is deeply in love with someone else and would give up everything just to be near them. The lyrics describe the intense feeling the singer feels when he is near his loved one. He claims that this person is the closest thing to heaven he will ever experience, and he doesn't want to go home because he wants to be with them. He is consumed by the present moment, and all he can taste and breathe is his loved one’s presence, and he doesn't want to miss even a second with them.

Despite these intense feelings, the singer is also acutely aware of the reality that love is fragile and can be easily broken. He wants to keep his love hidden because he doesn't believe that the world would understand their connection. He believes that everything is made to be broken, and only he and his loved one can comprehend their bond. The singer also understands that heartbreak is an inevitable part of love, and this awareness causes him to feel emotional and sheds tears.

Fun fact: The band confirmed the story of the music video. The man suffers from terrible agoraphobia and social anxiety. He's very lonely and every day he looks through his telescope to watch people interact and takes down notes on how to socialize. He tries going out several times but is too scared and ends up changing his mind. He then has a breakdown from the isolation. Eventually he has enough and at the end he musters up the courage to leave his roof and goes out to see the world and try to make himself happy

Another fact: John Rzeznik was terribly depressed by that time, so he wasn't able to write or compose anything. And this song was a relief.

@portalgangadventures

Another fun fact. The Mandolin and epic guitar solo were performed by a session artist by the name of Time Pierce.

Reminds me of hunchback of Notre dame
