Good Shoes Lyrics

Drunken fools singing 80's tunes
They'll be singing out of tune saying
Get the foreigners out of my area
A skinhead in a burberry coat
This is not the sort of place you want to take your kids to
Fifty pound shops
Morden
Starring at the government not noticing the queen
A superdrunk in a kfc
Is this everything you need for a cultured city?
Or is this everything you need to promote burglary
You don't get this in the country side
A skinhead coming at you with a knife
Oh but you do
There must be something wrong with our society or is it
Morden
I read the news today
A youth killed himself in a horrible way
He hung himself
From the local supermarket car park
Walking down canon hill lane
I saw the flowers lay where a car crash took place
A drug dealer crashed into a chicane
It sort of sums up my area in
Morden
The lyrics of Good Shoes's song "Morden" present a satirical critique of the eponymous district located in South London. The song's protagonist seems to lament the lack of cultural landmarks and beauty in Morden, instead depicting it as an area populated by inebriated and xenophobic hooligans who casually sing offensive songs and look down on foreigners. The song mentions a variety of everyday scenarios in which the singer is confronted with the bleak reality of life in Morden, such as encountering a burberry-coated skinhead (implying possible links to the far-right movement), a drunk person in a KFC, and fifty pound shops - all of which add up to a bleak depiction of the town.
However, the most poignant part of the song is when the singer talks about tragic events that have recently occurred in his area. The song mentions a youth who killed himself in a supermarket carpark, and a car accident that resulted in a drug dealer crashing into a chicane. These events are a reminder of the harshness of living in Morden and highlight the song's message - that the area is not a desirable place to live, and the bleakness and hopelessness of the surroundings have grave emotional and social consequences.
Interestingly, the song "Morden" was not received very positively by many residents of the area, with some describing it as a "slander" of their home. The borough council even invited the band to visit the area and reconsider their lyrics. The song has, however, remained a fan favourite and is often cited as a classic example of Good Shoes's socially aware music.

Good Shoes debut record is vastly underrated and criminally unnoticed. I adore it and it still get's a lot of spins to this day. Lyric's are fantastic and the song writing itself is very British.
