The River Driver
Great Big Sea Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was just the age of sixteen
When I first went on the drive
After six months hard labor
At home I did arrive
I courted with a pretty girl
T'was her caused me to roam
Now I'm just a river driver
And I'm far away from home

[Chorus]
I'll eat when I am hungry
And I'll drink when I am dry
Get drunk whenever I'm ready
Get sober by and by
And if this river don't drown me
It's down I'll mean to roam
For I'm a river driver
And I'm far away from home

I'll build a lonesome castle
Upon some mountain high
Where she can sit and view me
As I go passing by
Where she can sit and view me
As I go marching on
For I'm a river driver
And I'm far away from home

[Chorus]

When I am old and feeble
And in my sickness lie
Just wrap me up in a blanket
And lay me down to die
Just get a little bluebird
To sing for me alone
For I'm a river driver
And I'm far away from home

[Chorus: x2]

For I'm a river driver
And I'm far away from home

Overall Meaning

The Great Big Sea's song "The River Driver," tells the story of a young man who became a river driver at the age of sixteen. He had just returned home after six months of hard labor when he met a pretty girl and fell in love instantly. However, his love for her made him leave home again and continue working as a river driver. The chorus of the song indicates that being a river driver is a challenging job, but the singer knows the ups and downs of it, and he will continue to do it until he dies. The lyrics are his reflections on his life and his acceptance of the challenges that life will bring.

The singer intends to build a lonesome castle on a high mountain, where his beautiful girl could sit and view as he goes passing by. The symbolism of building a castle can be interpreted as the singer's aspirations to be successful and bring prosperity to his family. The chorus of the song is repetitive and highlighted four essential elements in the lyrics, namely hunger, thirst, being drunk, and sober. It represents the singer's state of mind and highlights how tough life can be as a river driver. The final verse of the song is a reflection on the singer's old age and his acceptance of death. He wants to be wrapped up in a blanket and laid down to die, while a little bluebird sings for him alone.
