Brothers in Arms
Gregorian Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

These mist covered mountains
Are a home now for me
But my home is the lowlands
And always will be.
Some day you'll return to
Your valleys and your farms
And you'll no longer burn
To be brothers in arms.
verse two:
Through these fields of destruction
Baptism of fire
I've witnessed your suffering
As the battle raged higher.
And though they did hurt me so bad
In my fear and alarm
You did not desert me
My brothers in arms.
verse three:
There's so many different worlds
So many different suns
And we have just one world
But we live in different ones.
verse four:
Now the sun's gone to hell
And the moon's riding high
Let me bid you farewell
Every man has to die.
But it's written in the starlight
And every line in your palm

We're fools to make war
On our brothers in arms...

Overall Meaning

The song Brothers in Arms by Gregorian is an emotional tribute to the bond and fellowship shared by soldiers in the battlefield. The opening verse talks about how the mountains, which once seemed foreign and unfamiliar, have become a home for the singer. However, he still identifies with the lowlands, which he considers to be his true home. The singer then acknowledges that his fellow soldiers will one day return to their families and their farms. With time, the memories of their shared experiences will fade, and they may forget about the common bond that they shared on the battlefield.

This version is beautiful, but have you heard the new acapella version by Home Free? It may change your mind as to which is the best. You can hear every word and the "instrumentals" being purely vocal add so much feeling and depth it can stun the listener completely.

Nah, Mark Kopfler's performance at "A Night in London" (BBC Live Concert in April of 96) is so haunting, and including a string quartet just pushes every button. The only other song that can evoke such strong feelings in this Marine Corps veteran is "Taps."
