Venus Fly
Grimes feat. Janelle Monáe Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey
Oh why you looking at me? (Against the music)
Hey
Oh why you looking at me? (Baby I can use it)

Why you looking at me now?
Why you looking at me again?
What if I pulled my teeth?
Cut my hair underneath my chin

Wrap my curls all around the world
Throw my pearls all across the floor
Feel my beat like a sniper girl
('Cause I want it more)

Hey, what about me?
Oh, why you looking at me?
Oh, why you looking at me?
(Against the music)

Hey, what about me?
Oh, why you looking at me?
Oh, why you looking at me? (Baby I can use it)

Pitty, pitty, pitty pat
Why you always doing that?
Why you always talking smack?
Yeah, Grimes got my back

Pitty, pitty, pitty pat
Why you always call it black?
Why you always talking smack?
Yeah, Grimes-

Why you looking at me now?
Why you looking at me again?
What if I pulled my teeth?
Cut my hair underneath my chin

Wrap my curls all around the world
Throw my pearls all across the floor
Feel my beat like a sniper girl
('Cause I want it more)

Hey, what about me?
Oh, why you looking at me?
Oh, why you looking at me?
(Against the music)
Hey, what about me?
Oh, why you looking at me?
Oh, why you looking at me? (Baby I can use it)

(Venus fly!)
Hey! What about
Again
Hey! What about
Oh, why you looking at me?
Again
Again

Hey!
Oh, why you looking at me?
Oh, why you looking at me?
Baby, I can use it

(All gotta freak, yeah, you a freak!

I said we all gotta freak, yeah, you a freak!
Freak, freak)

Overall Meaning

The song "Venus Fly" by Grimes feat. Janelle Monáe seems to be about two strong women who are expressing their power and independence. They confront the person who is staring at them and question why they are being looked at. They go on to suggest that they can change their appearance and still feel confident in themselves. The line "feel my beat like a sniper girl" could signify their strong will and determination.

As the song progresses, they continue to assert themselves and declare that Grimes has their back, likely meaning that they have each other's support in their journeys towards success and self-love. They challenge the idea of being seen as different or a "freak" and instead embrace their uniqueness.

The refrain of "Hey, what about me? Oh, why you looking at me?" could be interpreted as a call for recognition and respect, a desire to be seen for who they truly are and not just for their appearance.

Overall, the song is a celebration of individuality and confidence, with a strong message of female empowerment.

This song feels like a rave in an art gallery

@fernandamontano7387

Or an art gallery in a rave 😂

@Kristen.The.Girl_

Those are the best kind of raves

@Rabidsandwich

I have been to many raves in an art gallery. A place called the Garage Gallery in LA. One section is for the only stage. The other is the art exhibit. Mostly psychedelic pieces. More for mature people, for everyone was respectful. No one littered or fought anyone. No one damaged the artwork. Everyone had a great time. If anyone lives in LA, check it out when quarantine is lifted. Hopefully they still throw raves.

The fact that she directed and edited this is jaw dropping. She has an uncapped ability to live and breath art.

@moradadada5920

Janelle directed it as well. You can see her influence a lot. The mix of two is amazing

@zedboy9999

@Devasuri nope. Just grimes directed. Also she wrote and produced the song herself she's a one man band breaking the gender norms of a male dominated industry of producers. Grimes = producer first, pop star second x

@Jon Bz 💯💯💯 yeah I've seen every interview with her from the beginning and you're absolutely right and that's exactly how she would put it and that's where she's the most comfortable. In fact just to put this out there for those who are new to crimes and don't know this; she really only ever took the stage out of necessity.... She has never liked her own seeing me very much but she had to do it because she had no one else.... So that's how she started. And also for those who are new she was a bit of a prodigy with ballet I guess I think she's probably a prodigy with everything she does right how could she not be... Intense. That's the word she chose to describe her relationship with ballet before she quit.
