Atlas Shrugged
Guns N' Roses Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Why should I try and judge
The things they say
That just won’t budge, I’m letting go
And sheltered from the blind
So you managed to be kind
But still enough to show me how
To keep it together
When I’m crying out in vain
No matter who’s to blame
There’s still a ways to go
So, if you ask me to believe
Your heart won’t follow you
It’s got a mind of it's own

When it says "Run" and the road gets rough
And you’re the one
Whose shoulders just ain’t wide enough
Whose shoulders shrug when they’ve had enough

I’d be the last to say
"don’t follow your heart"
But there’s more to what it takes to be a man
Than what you know what you’ve shown
Than that we know you understand

It's not the thing, if I were you
I would say all that I do
To be half as strong, or still belong
You should take the time
To look back at what you find
Your heart misadventures

When it says "Run" and the road gets rough
And you’re the one
Whose shoulders just ain’t wide enough
Whose shoulders shrug when they’ve had enough

I’d be the last to say
"don’t follow your heart"
But there’s more to what it takes to be a man
Than what you've known what you’ve shown
Than that we know you understand
In fact, I never said
"don’t follow your heart"
If I thought that's what it
Takes to make a man from what you've known
All that you’ve been shown
Gee, even now I'd hope you'd understand

I’d be the last to say
"don’t follow your heart"
But there’s more to what it takes to be a man
Than what you've known and what you’ve shown
Than what we know you understand
In fact, I'd never say
"don’t follow your heart"
If I thought that's what it'd
Take to make a man from what you've known

All that you’ve been shown
Gee, even now I'd hope you'd understand

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Atlas Shrugged" by Guns N' Roses are reflective of the internal struggle and confusion experienced by the singer in the song. The opening lines encapsulate a sense of frustration and disillusionment with trying to make sense of what others say and the inability to let go of certain emotions. The singer feels sheltered from the blindness of others but acknowledges the kindness shown by someone who has taught them how to keep it together in difficult times.

The chorus delves deeper into the idea of following one's heart and the challenges and sacrifices that come with it. The metaphorical phrase "shoulders shrug" represents a moment of giving up or feeling overwhelmed when faced with the hardships of life. The singer acknowledges that they would never discourage someone from following their heart, but also highlights that being a man or a strong individual requires more than simply obeying the heart's desires. It requires resilience, understanding, and growth beyond what is comfortable or familiar.

The following verse emphasizes the importance of personal strength and individuality. The singer suggests that if they were in the listener's shoes, they would strive to be as resilient as they perceive the listener to be. It encourages self-reflection and taking the time to evaluate past experiences and learn from them. The phrase "heart misadventures" implies that although the heart may lead us in unexpected directions, there is value in embracing the lessons learned along the way.

The song then revisits the chorus, reinforcing the concept that following one's heart is crucial, but there is more to being a man or a strong individual. The singer admits to never discouraging following one's heart, but emphasizes the need for personal growth beyond what is currently known or shown. The final lines express the singer's hope that the listener comprehends the deeper meaning behind their words.

Overall, "Atlas Shrugged" explores the complexities of embracing personal desires, heartache, and growth. It acknowledges the importance of following one's heart but also emphasizes the necessity of developing strength, understanding, and self-awareness in order to truly navigate through life as a mature and fulfilled individual.

@LN-Lifer

OMG is one of the most underrated GNR songs ever
Especially live

@LN-Lifer

That bridge in Monsters is someof the best GNR ever
I didn't think it would sound good with Axl's current voice.

Also
I wasn't a fan of Absurd until I heard it live in person last month...I was very pleasantly surprised

@matthird330

I hope they don't change too much with Atlas Shrugged and State of Grace. I like them the way they are.

@cutofthejib

I don’t think it will be a Silkworms to Absurd kinda change I think you will get a fuller sound out of the re-records of the instrumental and maybe some layered vocals like we did with Perhaps and Hard Skool.

@matthird330

I only heard Monsters once before it disappeared. I really liked it too.

@lorenzom30

Melissa Reese got the keyboard gig because she was working with Brain and he recommended her to Axl.

@LN-Lifer

Axl "came out" as bipolar before the 2000s
Heck even Marilyn Manson was mocking him for it in his book in about (1999?) and it was old news even then

@thegreatwhitehope77

Do you prefer this compared to State of Grace? Just curious. SOG is amazing in comparison in my opinion.

@cutofthejib

Its subjective State of Grace is good too.

@wasted711

Its the bridge on Monsters that lines up with Axl's Soul Monster online chat quote.
