this is an absolute masterpiece, because I think it conveys a feeling about war that no other piece has ever articulated.

notice how nearly the entire piece is in 5/4. this is interesting because humans cannot naturally march to 5/4, because we only have two legs. this is why every military march uses 4/4, because it is the easiest to march to. this could imply that war is inhuman; 5/4 time cannot be marched to naturally. since one always starts the bar with their left foot hitting the ground, this is impossible with an odd number.

the entire piece sounds very military-like as well, with snare drum hits and brass littered throughout the piece - typical instruments of a military band, especially a few hundred years ago. many sections involving the trumpets and horns sound like war horns as well, signaling that the fight has started and to rush into the fray. the repeating triplet-quarter-quarter-eighth-eighth-quarter ostinato in the strings and percussion has a very military-like feel as well; it seems like this uneven, asymmetrical beat never ceases, which could be considered similar to war in a way.

the entire piece also has incredibly dissonant chords and intervals; there is frequent use of minor 2nds, tritones, and minor 9ths, widely regarded the most dissonant intervals in western music. they are incredibly unpleasant to hear. this could portray how war is horrible to watch and hear for all involved, civilians and soldiers alike.

you can't deny this piece does an amazing job at characterizing war. bravo, holst!

Tremors from underground. Deep grumblings. Bellowings like thunders in the distance. Word spreads quickly. Axiety sweeps over. Is it real? Is this really happening? A sudden burst, vapors and smoke from the entrance of the deepest known cave leave no room for doubt.
The dragon is awake!
People from all over the land rush, the cave needs to be sealed for good, and quickly! Men work tirelessly, frantically, as thunderous quackes mount in frequency. Urgency is real.
But the machine is ready!
Gears in motion, volumes after volumes of earth and heavy rocks are poured in. Just as the growling of the beast becomes more distinct, the last bucket is thrown. A collective sigh of relief ensues, as the cave is sealed, just in time.
Yet something is moving. Darkness befalls, and the ground shakes again. He cannot possibly breach all this mass!
Or can he?
The quackes resume. Like sledgehammers swung from below. A bulge appears to slowly form. Small plumes of vapor and smoke breach the ground as it grows.
Havoc!
The ground violently erupts, a huge fireball blasts the dome! A fiery column of lava shoots miles upwards! A shockwave rolls over the land, flattening everything in it's wake!
And in the middle of the column, a dark, tall, massive and terrible figure emerges, covered in glowing hot molten rock, red fearsome eyes, fire breathing from his mouth and nostrils, the dragon is here!

It’s insane to think that this song is responsible for heavy metal, Star Wars, and every Mario game since SMB3.

@jadennelson7886

And batman’s soundtrack.

@braziliantsar

I can't hear it in Mario overall. But Mario Galaxy on the other hand, oh boy
