The band consists of Adam Gardner and Ryan Miller on guitar and vocals and Brian Rosenworcel on percussion. Multi-instrumentalist and backup vocalist Joe Pisapia played with the band from 2003-2010. Luke Reynolds took Pisapia's place to tour with the band for their 2010 album, Easy Wonderful, and has remained with the band since. The band is noted for its catchy, poppy melodies, and the distinctive hand-drumming on percussion. They are also known for their humor, including a joke album released in 2003, The Meowstro Sings: Guster's Keep It Together, wherein the lyrics are replaced with (off-melody) meowing.
The band has released eight studio albums which are, in chronological order, Parachute, Goldfly, Lost and Gone Forever, Keep It Together, Ganging Up On the Sun, Easy Wonderful, Evermotion, and their most recent, Look Alive, which was released on January 18th, 2019. In addition, they have released a total of eleven live albums, spanning the years 2003-2015.

But you are here
And the moment clouds your brain
You could have even saved him
That means nothing
You could have even been there
It's a lie
How can you blame him for your life
It's a mental suicide
And it carries you away
Dissolve your fears into one
Try to figure out
Dissolve will find a way
And it's true we aren't immune
But there's a way
And denial crowds your brain
To try and understand him
That means nothing
To you and find the meaning
It's a lie
How can you blame him for your life
It's a mental suicide
And it carries you away
Dissolve your fears into one
Try to figure out
Dissolve will find a way
To right or wrong
To understand
To figure out
It's in his plans
To leave alone
To find a way
To figure out
It's not your fault
And it's the both of you he's ruined
He's torn away
All the desire born inside
You could have even saved him
That means nothing
You could have even been there
It's a lie
To try and understand him
That means nothing
To try and find the meaning
It's a lie
Dissolve your fears into one
Try to figure out
Dissolve will find a way
To leave alone
To find a way
To figure out
It's not your fault
You see yourself
Mother would be proud of you
To leave alone
To find a way
To figure out
It's not your fault
You see yourself
Mother would be proud of you anymore
The song "Dissolve" by Guster is a powerful portrayal of the guilt, regret, and emotional turmoil that can arise after the loss of a loved one. The first verse speaks directly to the survivor's feelings of guilt, reminding them that although their loved one was young, they were still there in the moment and could have potentially saved them. The survivor is haunted by the idea that they could have done something to prevent the tragedy, yet they feel powerless to change the past.
The chorus of the song emphasizes the importance of facing fears and allowing oneself to feel vulnerable in order to heal. Dissolving one's fears into one signifies the idea that by facing one's fears head-on, they can start to understand and process the emotions associated with grief. The repetition of the mantra "dissolve will find a way" provides an uplifting message of hope and resilience to the listener.
The second verse speaks to the survivor's struggle to come to terms with their loved one's death. Denial has clouded their judgment and they are struggling to make sense of why their loved one took their own life. Despite their desperation to understand, they come to the realization that there is no clear answer or meaning behind the tragedy- it is simply a fact of life.
Overall, "Dissolve" is a poignant and powerful song that captures the complexities of navigating grief and moving forward after loss.
