The band consists of Adam Gardner and Ryan Miller on guitar and vocals and Brian Rosenworcel on percussion. Multi-instrumentalist and backup vocalist Joe Pisapia played with the band from 2003-2010. Luke Reynolds took Pisapia's place to tour with the band for their 2010 album, Easy Wonderful, and has remained with the band since. The band is noted for its catchy, poppy melodies, and the distinctive hand-drumming on percussion. They are also known for their humor, including a joke album released in 2003, The Meowstro Sings: Guster's Keep It Together, wherein the lyrics are replaced with (off-melody) meowing.
The band has released eight studio albums which are, in chronological order, Parachute, Goldfly, Lost and Gone Forever, Keep It Together, Ganging Up On the Sun, Easy Wonderful, Evermotion, and their most recent, Look Alive, which was released on January 18th, 2019. In addition, they have released a total of eleven live albums, spanning the years 2003-2015.
Never Coming Down
Guster Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
We can go kickin' seashells in the sky
My, my, we're never coming down
Open up a box of bees
We can go buzzin' rooftops all night long
We're gone and never coming down
Gotta put the chickens in when the sun goes down
Everbody knows when you climb the rings
We dance with the kings and queens
And it's true, I know, we're never coming down
Everybody knows that it's time to disco
Better put the chickens in when the wolves come out
Everybody knows when you climb the rings
You drink with the kings and queens
And it's true, I know, we're never coming down
Away we go, I know, we're never coming down
In Guster's song Never Coming Down, the singer speaks about enjoying a moment of freedom with their partner. The line "saddle up next to me" suggests that the singer wants their partner to join them for a ride, and together they can "go kickin' seashells in the sky," which in essence means they can achieve something unattainable, keeping the freedom of soaring without being held down by anything. The literal interpretation of the next line "Open up a box of bees, we can go buzzin' rooftops all night long" is out of ordinary, but it conveys a sense of doing an activity that is utterly fun and exciting, and the two of them, i.e., the singer and their partner, can do it, and it's totally cool.
The way the song is constructed, with repetitive lines, suggests that they are enjoying the moment and do not want to be bothered with the mundane routines of life. The song concentrates on experiencing life with happiness, and with the desire to live it, to the fullest. The second verse talks about the fact that "everyone knows it's time to disco" and people should "put the chickens in when the wolves come out." It can be interpreted that people should switch their lives to joy from the daily routines of life. The song conveys a sense of joy and happiness and defiantly declares that "we're never coming down," implying that they will continue to enjoy life's joys and stay happy.
