Beginning
Haedes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Life is but a vapor
See there? You know
So make it count
Write it out on paper
Reap what you sow
Only this sounds
Like I am my own savior nailing my story
Upon my own tree in all it's glory
Shine bright my only Maker
This evil will not be down deep inside of me
Come now and make me see

Oh the joys of being young
You're ten years old you live life as you please
Then one day it all has gone
Life slips up and it's my turn to leave

It feels like a midlife crisis at twenty-seven
Not calling this sin selfish ambition
Small reckless child might mind when nobody listens
Pays no attention doesn't remember
The rite of passage life is, she begins then ends
Fast forward moments that we are given
Until we see what Christ is, Beginning and End
Ruler of all men, perfect without sin

Oh the joys of being young
We're just children playing Fox and the Hound

Reading books in my mother's lap
Laying in that green Georgia grass

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Haedes's song "Beginning" seem to touch upon the transient and fleeting nature of life, likening it to a vapor that disappears quickly. The opening lines suggest the importance of making one's life meaningful and impactful, urging the listener to make each moment count and to create a lasting legacy. The imagery of writing one's story on paper and reaping what one sows underscores the idea of personal responsibility and consequence.

The next verse shifts to a nostalgic reflection on the innocence and carefree nature of youth, highlighting the simplicity and joy of being a ten-year-old living life without worries or constraints. The abrupt realization that life can change in an instant, signaling one's own mortality and departure from this world, adds a somber and contemplative tone to the song.

The following section delves into a sense of existential questioning and turmoil, captured through the metaphor of a midlife crisis at the age of twenty-seven. The lyrics express a struggle with identity, purpose, and the desire for deeper meaning beyond selfish ambitions or superficial pursuits. The reference to Christ as the Beginning and End, the Ruler of all men, presents a spiritual dimension to the introspective journey of self-discovery and redemption.

The final verse returns to a wistful remembrance of childhood innocence and the simple pleasures of youth, evoking warm and idyllic memories of reading books in a mother's lap and lounging in the lush green grass of Georgia. The contrast between the carefree moments of childhood and the weightier themes of adulthood and mortality creates a poignant reflection on the passage of time and the cyclical nature of life's stages. Through these poignant and introspective lyrics, the song invites the listener to contemplate their own journey, struggles, and aspirations in the grand tapestry of existence.

For new players, I recommend Sisyphus's keepsake. Gives you +100% damage to your attacks unaffected by boons. Helps you clear the first section super fast if you don't get the god boons you want. You can even take it to the end if you get a couple chaos gates doing stupid amounts of flat damage. I took it for almost 50% of my runs until I got Persephone's keepsake.

I'm on my first playthrough and I'm using God Mode after getting my ass handed to me a fair bit, now I'm more aware death doesn't really matter. I'm going to try using the Bow next time. Thanks for the tips. ๐Ÿ‘

I use the fists with Ares doom on the attack and Athens dash and special. With privilege status and the duo boon that activates Ares doom effects immediately. It's super OP
