In January 2015, Halsey tweeted the opening of the song as well as a video of her pouring ‘a hundred dollar bottle of champagne’ into a bath or ‘down the drain’.

Gasoline
Halsey Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Bought a hundred dollar bottle of champagne like me?
Just to pour that motherfucker down the drain like me?
Would you use your water bill to dry the stain like me?
Are you high enough without the Mary Jane like me?
Do you tear yourself apart to entertain like me?
Do the people whisper 'bout you on the train like me?
Saying that you shouldn't waste your pretty face like me?
And all the people say
You can't wake up, this is not a dream
You're part of a machine, you are not a human being
With your face all made up, living on a screen
Low on self esteem, so you run on gasoline
Whoa, whoa, whoa, oh
I think there's a flaw in my code
Whoa, whoa, whoa, oh
These voices won't leave me alone
Well, my heart is gold and my hands are cold
Are you deranged like me? Are you strange like me?
Lightin' matches just to swallow up the flame like me?
Do you call yourself a fuckin' hurricane like me?
Pointing fingers 'cause you'll never take the blame like me?
And all the people say
You can't wake up, this is not a dream
You're part of a machine, you are not a human being
With your face all made up, living on a screen
Low on self esteem, so you run on gasoline
Whoa, whoa, whoa, oh
I think there's a flaw in my code
Whoa, whoa, whoa, oh
These voices won't leave me alone
Well, my heart is gold and my hands are cold
The lyrics to Halsey's song "Gasoline" touch upon themes surrounding mental and emotional instability, loneliness, and societal pressure to conform. The first verse asks a series of questions, including whether the listener has experienced pain and wasted money on luxury items, only to throw them away. Halsey then asks whether the listener has used their water bill to dry a stain, suggesting that they're willing to sacrifice basic necessities for their destructive habits.
The chorus speaks to feelings of detachment and a lack of control over one's own life. Halsey suggests that the listener is part of a machine instead of a human being, living a life through screens and lacking self-esteem. The metaphor of running on gasoline highlights the idea of addiction and dependency, perhaps suggesting that the listener is using destructive habits to cope with their feelings of isolation.
The second verse continues on with these themes, asking whether the listener is deranged, strange, or points fingers rather than taking responsibility. The chorus repeats, emphasizing the feeling of being trapped in a cycle of self-destruction and seeking validation from others.
Overall, "Gasoline" speaks to the struggles of young people in a world that can feel isolating, demanding, and unforgiving. Halsey's lyrics emphasize the potentially dangerous ways that people may cope with these feelings, highlighting the importance of recognizing and addressing mental health issues.

@BlackSeranna
My daughter had a friend in college like that - she was pretty, petite, and her poison of choice was alcohol. She could drink an entire bottle during a night of partying, no one knew how. Sometimes, in order to dry herself out, she would go home. Her parents would feel bad for her, and they took her shopping hoping that would solve her issues.
She ended up dropping out of college.
Recently I asked my daughter about this former friend; I found out she had dried herself out and she went back to school and got a degree in education. She now teaches elementary kids and loves it.
Sometimes one must find the love for one's self before one can fix the problems. She was a great example, at least to me, what works.
My daughter's other friend never figured it out. I loved that kid - his dad owned factories over in China, and he was super sweet to me (even though to the naked eye, I don't look like I have any money; and certainly, I never belonged in a financial class with this kid's parents). That kid, he didn't make it past the age of 26. It grieves my heart that somehow, he fell into the cracks. It just hurts because I see a kid with such potential and kindness, but he couldn't face his demons down.
