To Love Somebody
Hank Williams Jr. Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I want my life to be lived with you oh lived with you there's a way
Everybody says to do each and every little thing
But what does it bring if I ain't got you if I ain't got I ain't you baby
You don't know what it's like baby you don't know what it's like
To love somebody love somebody like I love you
There's a brain I see your face again I know my frame of mind
But babe I'm a man can't you see that I am
I live and I breathe for you what good does it do
Cause I ain't got you I ain't you baby
You don't know what it's like
You don't know what it's like
You don't know what it's like
The lyrics of Hank Williams Jr.'s song, "To Love Somebody," express the feeling of longing for someone and how painful it is to not have the person we love by our side. The singer talks about a certain kind of light that never shone on him until he met the person he loves. He wants to live his life with this person and doesn't care about what everyone else says regarding their relationship. Without this person, life seems meaningless, and nothing else can bring true satisfaction.
The second part of the song emphasizes the desperation of the singer to be with his love. He sees the person's face everywhere he goes, and it affects his state of mind. The singer believes that he can not see because he is blind, and the love of this person has caused this blindness. He lives and breathes for this person and wants to know what good it does him if he does not have the person he loves. The lyrics convey the feeling of helplessness and a sense of incompleteness without the presence of the person he loves.

Thomas Boner
I love this version of this song. I like The Bee Gees version a little bit more, but Hank does a great rendition of it. I don't know why he didn't like recording it, it's great!

@Carolina Man I loved his cover of the Beatles' Norwegian Wood too. Reminds me of how Willie Nelson has also done so many amazing covers in his own unique way.

You know a song is great when it transcends genres. Different musicians can make it their own style and it's still good. I love both the Bee Gees pop version and Hank Jr.'s country twist. James Carr put an awesome soul spin on it too.

+Thomas Boner ..Hank always could remake a song like no one else. I guess that came from being forced to sing Sr's songs all those years. Hank's versions of "Air That I Breathe", "Tuesday's Gone", "Wild and Blue" and countless others were remade without butchering the originals and could stand on their own.

This is why Hank is so unique, this is a Bee Gees song, the complete opposite of a country song, and Hank still rocks it.
