Despite producing an excellent, melodic, catchy and very Magnum-like self-titled album the band was relatively short-lived with Clarkin announcing it's demise around 1999. The album "Hard Rain" (1997), follows the previous Magnum formula with Catley's superb vocals, Clarkin's guitars and use of backing keyboards in the older "prog rock" tradition; as well as a slightly funkier beat and harmonic backing vocals (Sue McCloskey). A second, more experimental album, "When the Good Times Come" followed in 1999.
In 1981, two tracks were written and produced by Clarkin and were sung by Sue McCloskey, a friend of Magnum. They were entitled "Really Need Your Love" and "Lost Inside Myself". After Catley left Hard Rain, Clarkin continued to write material with McCloskey. Some of these songs were broadcast on radio during an interview with Clarkin. Two of these songs surfaced as Magnum songs, "Still" and "Dream About You" on Magnum's 2002 studio album, Breath of Life.
Often overlooked but if you are a long-standing fan of Magnum then you're very likely to want the album "Hard Rain" in your collection as it rivals the best that the former band had to offer.

You spoke to me out loud
I couldn't break the dream, it's crazy
I'm lost on foreign ground
I know it's nothing new
But it happens to be true
I'm still in love with you, baby blue
Left me broken hearted
And my tears fell like pouring rain
And I will never be the same
Well, I must have been blind
I was looking but I couldn't see
You walking away, away from me
I can't believe the times lately
You've been on my mind
I wish I could say to you maybe
Words I could not find
I know they may be few
But what am I to do?
I'm still in love with you, baby blue
Shot down back to where I started
Left me broken hearted
And my tears fell like pouring rain
And I will never be the same
Well, I must have been blind
I was looking but I couldn't see
You walking away, away from me
Shot down back to where I started
Left me broken hearted
And my tears fell like pouring rain
(Well, I don't like this game)
And I will never be the same
Well, I must have been blind
I was looking but I couldn't see
You walking away, away from me
My tears fell like pouring rain
And I will never be the same
Well, I must have been blind
I was looking but I couldn't see
You walking away, away from me
The lyrics of the song "I Must Have Been Blind" by Hard Rain express feelings of regret and heartbreak after someone has lost their lover. The song describes the moment when the writer realizes that their lover has left them and they were too blind to see the signs. The opening lines create the mood of darkness and isolation as the writer feels lost in foreign ground, unable to break free from the dream. Even though the truth of the situation is not new, the writer still confesses to being in love with the person who left them.
The chorus of the song is powerful, describing the immense pain that the writer feels after their lover has left them. They feel as if they have been shot down and left broken-hearted. The pouring rain is a metaphor for the tears that have fallen from their eyes as they realize that they will never be the same again. The writer realizes that they must have been blind to the fact that their lover was walking away from them.
The verse after the chorus expresses the feeling of longing for the person who left them. Even though they cannot find the right words to say to them, they express that they are still in love with them. The second chorus is sung again, expressing the same feelings of regret and brokenness. The song ends with a repetition of the last line of the chorus, emphasizing the writer's realization that they were too blind to see their lover walking away from them.
