Despite producing an excellent, melodic, catchy and very Magnum-like self-titled album the band was relatively short-lived with Clarkin announcing it's demise around 1999. The album "Hard Rain" (1997), follows the previous Magnum formula with Catley's superb vocals, Clarkin's guitars and use of backing keyboards in the older "prog rock" tradition; as well as a slightly funkier beat and harmonic backing vocals (Sue McCloskey). A second, more experimental album, "When the Good Times Come" followed in 1999.
In 1981, two tracks were written and produced by Clarkin and were sung by Sue McCloskey, a friend of Magnum. They were entitled "Really Need Your Love" and "Lost Inside Myself". After Catley left Hard Rain, Clarkin continued to write material with McCloskey. Some of these songs were broadcast on radio during an interview with Clarkin. Two of these songs surfaced as Magnum songs, "Still" and "Dream About You" on Magnum's 2002 studio album, Breath of Life.
Often overlooked but if you are a long-standing fan of Magnum then you're very likely to want the album "Hard Rain" in your collection as it rivals the best that the former band had to offer.

Hard Rain Lyrics

Don't want to be misunderstood
I found another woman this time
Got you on my mind
Open your door, fire in the hole
Well, I'm about to lose it, bless my soul
All you want to do is collect
You put me down but that's all right
You're going to be alone tonight
So won't you cry, cry, cry, a little bit
Your tears come falling just like thunder and rain
Cry, cry, cry, just a little bit
You're in a dirty mess, well, ain't that a shame?
Don't criticise, don't make a fuss
Ain't no solution for the two of us
Well, you go your way, not mine
Baby, that's fine
Ain't no mistake, you've made your bed
I took advantage of the things you said
Everything you borrow, you pay
Ain't that the way?
You put me down but that's all right
You're going to be alone tonight
So won't you cry, cry, cry, a little bit
Your tears come falling just like thunder and rain
Cry, cry, cry, just a little bit
Shame, shame, ain't that a shame?
You put me down but that's all right
You're going to be alone tonight
So won't you cry, cry, cry, a little bit
Cry, cry, cry just a little bit
Won't you cry, cry, cry, a little bit
You're in a dirty mess, well, ain't that a shame?
Cry, cry, cry, a little bit
Your tears come falling just like thunder and rain
Cry, cry, cry, just a little bit
You're in a dirty, well, ain't that a shame?
Cry, cry, cry, a little bit
Your tears come falling just like thunder and rain
Cry, cry, cry, just a little bit
Shame, shame, ain't that a shame?
Cry, cry, cry, a little bit
Your tears falling like rain
Cry, cry, cry, just a little bit
Shame, shame, ain't that a shame?
The lyrics to Hard Rain's song Cry Cry Cry are centered around a man who has found another woman while still being involved with his current partner. The man is straightforward with his partner and tells her that he doesn't want to be misunderstood but has found someone else. The chorus of the song serves as a warning for the partner to brace herself, as the man will not be coming back and she will be left alone, crying like thunder and rain. This is highlighted further, as the man sings that she's in a dirty mess and that it's a shame. The partner is encouraged not to criticize, fuss or make a scene but instead, accept the situation and move on, as there's no solution for the two of them. The man advises her to go her way, while he goes his way, as that's fine with him.
