Despite producing an excellent, melodic, catchy and very Magnum-like self-titled album the band was relatively short-lived with Clarkin announcing it's demise around 1999. The album "Hard Rain" (1997), follows the previous Magnum formula with Catley's superb vocals, Clarkin's guitars and use of backing keyboards in the older "prog rock" tradition; as well as a slightly funkier beat and harmonic backing vocals (Sue McCloskey). A second, more experimental album, "When the Good Times Come" followed in 1999.
In 1981, two tracks were written and produced by Clarkin and were sung by Sue McCloskey, a friend of Magnum. They were entitled "Really Need Your Love" and "Lost Inside Myself". After Catley left Hard Rain, Clarkin continued to write material with McCloskey. Some of these songs were broadcast on radio during an interview with Clarkin. Two of these songs surfaced as Magnum songs, "Still" and "Dream About You" on Magnum's 2002 studio album, Breath of Life.
Often overlooked but if you are a long-standing fan of Magnum then you're very likely to want the album "Hard Rain" in your collection as it rivals the best that the former band had to offer.
Stop Me From Loving You
Hard Rain Lyrics

Ain′t no pleasure, ain't no pain
I won′t ever be the same
Took your love and run
I'm the loser from now on
It's crazy
I′ve got trouble on my mind
Can't believe you′re gone
I've been crying all night long
Open up and let me in
I don′t know where to begin
Open up and let me in
You'd better stop me from loving you
Stop me from loving you
′Cause deep in the night
Into the storm
Who's holding you tight
Keeping you warm
Stop me from loving you
Tell me I'm through
I can walk the line
You can see my face
What can I do?
In another time
In another place
I get to you
The song Stop Me From Loving You by Hard Rain is a sad love song about a man who lost his love and is regretting the mistakes he made in their relationship. The first verse starts with the singer saying that his broken heart cannot distinguish between pleasure or pain anymore, and it seems like he has lost his identity because his love has left him. He admits that it was his fault for not treating his lover well and that he is the one who has lost everything. The second verse is an expression of his desperation, and he wants his lover to open up and talk to him, but it seems like she has moved on.
The chorus is an implication that he cannot control his feelings for his lover and that he needs help to stop himself from loving her. He is sad that he cannot be with her, and it hurts him to think about her being with someone else. He is pleading to someone to stop him from loving her because he is helpless and wants to move on in his life. The last verse shows that he can see how he could have done things differently, but it is too late now. He wishes that under different circumstances, he could have been with her and showed her how much he loved her.
The song portrays the pain and suffering of a failed love relationship and the regret of not trying harder. It is a relatable and emotional song that anyone who has experienced the same feelings can identify with.
