Drown
Harmful Lyrics

Does it really matter?
Cause I was taught to believe that you're still here with us
I'm still waiting for the cause to drown
There's a small place where I just passed out
I remember when I was young there was no place for me to belong
Conversation is on the way
Isolation depends on what they say
There's a small place where I just passed out
I need a word to show what maybe done
Never heard a way to find the sun
Way to find the sun
In Harmful's emotional song "Drown," the lyrics paint a picture of grief and confusion after the loss of a loved one. The singer wakes up to the realization that the person they cared for is no longer alive, and they wonder if it really matters. They were taught to believe that the loved one is still with them in spirit, but the pain and isolation they feel suggest otherwise.
The lyrics suggest that the singer may be struggling with addiction or mental health issues. The line "I'm still waiting for the cause to drown" implies that they are seeking relief from their pain through drowning their sorrows. However, they acknowledge that this is a dangerous coping mechanism, and that they have "just passed out" in a small place where they can't find belonging.
Throughout the song, the singer is in conversation with themselves or others, trying to make sense of their emotions. They are isolated by their grief, and their ability to find "the sun" - to find peace or happiness - is hindered by their inability to express their feelings.
Overall, "Drown" is a poignant exploration of grief and the struggle to find hope in the face of loss. The lyrics suggest that while we may be taught to believe certain things about death and the afterlife, the true nature of loss is often much messier and harder to come to terms with.
