Over the Rainbow
Harold Arlen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high
There's a land that I've heard of once in a lullaby.
Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream,
Really do come true.

Someday I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops,
High above the chimney tops,
That's where you'll find me.

Somewhere over the rainbow, blue birds fly
Birds fly over the rainbow
Why then, oh why can't I?
If happy little bluebirds fly beyond the rainbow
Why, oh why can't I?

Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high
There's a land that I've heard of once in a lullaby.
Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream,
Really do come true.

Someday I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops,
High above the chimney tops,
That's where you'll find me.

Somewhere over the rainbow, blue birds fly
Birds fly over the rainbow
Why then, oh why can't I?

If happy little bluebirds fly beyond the rainbow
Why, oh why can't I?

Overall Meaning

The song "Over the Rainbow" speaks to the universal human longing for happiness and the quest for a better life. The opening lines transport the listener to a place of yearning, the word “somewhere” indicating an estimated location beyond the physical realm. The rainbow is a symbol of hope and optimism, a bridge between the celestial and earthly realms. The dreams referred to in the lyrics are representative of a better life, a higher state of being that is achievable through faith and imagination. The reference to lemon drops melting speaks to the sweetness of life and the desire to let go of worries and cares. The chimney tops reference, apart from singing to the idea of escape from mundane reality, also describes a sense of elevation, indicating a state of being that is above daily worries and strife.

The song concludes with the idea that if happy little bluebirds can fly beyond the rainbow, then it is possible for humans to achieve their dreams too. The contrast between the melancholic tone of the song and the upbeat melody sends a message of hope and optimism, inviting listeners to never give up their dreams, no matter how impossible they may seem.

I interpret Somewhere Over the Rainbow by Harold Arlen & E.Y. Harburg in a biblical content because I am a Catholic. Round the throne of God, there is pictured a majestic rainbow—used to communicate the glory of God. God has not just seen a natural phenomenon and been reminded of the covenant; God has intentionally placed the rainbow in the clouds to serve as a reminder of the covenant and a reminder of the promise to refrain from destructive action towards the earth.

So Judy Garland only and ever just sings the chorus part in the Wizard Of Oz?
