If it ain't got that swing
(doo wah, doo wah, doo wah, doo wah
Doo wah, doo wah, doo wah, doo wah)
It don't mean a thing
All you got to do is sing
(doo wah, doo wah, doo wah, doo wah
Doo wah, doo wah, doo wah, doo wah)
If it's sweet or hot
Just give that rhythm
Ev'rything you got
Oh, it don't mean a thing
If it ain't got that swing
(doo wah, doo wah, doo wah, doo wah
Doo wah, doo wah, doo wah, doo wah)
The song "It Don't Mean a Thing" by Harry Arnold highlights the importance of swing music. The lyrics convey that despite the sweetness or hotness of a song, it won't be significant if it doesn't have the rhythmic style of swing. The repetition of "doo wah" emphasizes the importance of having that swing in the music. The line "all you got to do is sing" hints at the simplicity of swing's essence. The lyrics suggest that the emphasis is more on the music's rhythm than on the lyrics.
The song's message echoes the ideology of swing musicians in the early 20th century. It was an era where jazz music was gaining popularity, and swing music evolved out of that trend. The genre's rhythm was so distinct that it became the staple of swing music. The song also hints at the idea that swing music is universal, and anyone can enjoy it by just "giving that rhythm everything you got." Overall, the song makes a significant contribution to the swing music genre, and its essentiality to swing music can still be felt today.
