Harry James was born in Albany, Georgia, the son of a bandleader of a traveling circus. By age 10 he was taking trumpet lessons from his father. His father had him on a very strict practicing schedule every day. He was given one page to learn out of the Arban's book (a trumpet drill book) every day and could not do anything until he learned that page.
In 1931 the family settled in Beaumont, Texas and James began playing with local dance bands. James joined the nationally popular Ben Pollack in 1935. At the start of 1937 he left Pollack to join Benny Goodman's orchestra, where he stayed through 1938.
In February of 1939 Harry James debuted his own big band in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He continued touring with the band into the 1980s. His was the first "name band" to employ vocalist Frank Sinatra, in 1939. In 1943 he married actress Betty Grable.
His first wife was ex B.Goodman singer.,Louise Tobin.
You can hear his trumpet playing in the 1950 film Young Man with a Horn, dubbing Kirk Douglas. His recording of "I'm Beginning to See the Light" appears in the motion picture My Dog Skip (2000). James recorded many popular records and appeared in many Hollywood movies.
In 1983, James was diagnosed with lymphatic cancer, but he continued to work, playing his last professional job on 26 June 1983 in Los Angeles just nine days before his death in Las Vegas, Nevada.

This absolutely grabs my heart each time I hear it because I am immediately swept back to the days when I was in my late husband's arms dancing together. Those years are now over 70 plus ago and I still grieve over the loss of him. I fell in love with him when I was 16 years old, he was 23. He was forever my heart and forever will be. The moment lost him after almost 48 years of marriage was the moment my life changed completely never ever to be the same. I can only say to those who still have their loved ones with them don't let the time slip by without telling that person what they are to you at that moment.

God bless you Kay, what a wonderful love story you have had to fall in love with your perfect soul-mate, especially at such a tender age, but it must be emotionally devastating to lose your life partner after all those years together, maybe you can take some solace from the fact that many people search all their lives, and are never lucky enough to find the one they can love, but you and your husband found each other and shared a happy life together, and you will always have those treasured memories, we should all heed your advice though, and tell our partners how much they mean to us while still together because we all have a use by date, and unfortunately that will come around sooner or later, so we really should be kind to each other in the meantime. 💕

This was my moms song. She was very excited every time she heard it. What a pitty she had died in the mid of 2000; just on the threshold of the 21 century. She had missed internet and YouTube. She could enjoy not only the music of Harry James, but also a video with the whole band and Helen Forrest.
