The lyrics of Hatred Surge's song Outsider are a reflection of the feeling of being an outcast or an outsider in society. The usage of strong verbs like crawl, crave, and thrive illustrate the desperation and yearning that the persona feels to belong and be recognized. The persona in the song is someone who has been ostracized from mainstream society and has learnt to live in the shadows, away from the warmth and light of affection and acceptance. However, even in that darkness, the persona feels a sense of power and agency.
The second half of the song, however, takes a darker turn. The persona begins to reflect on the fear that follows them, which is their own shadow or their own fear of rejection. The fear is the only thing that seems to be holding them back from embracing their true identity as an outsider in society.
