Assault & Battery
Hawkwind Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lives of great men all remind us
We may make our lives sublime
And departing leave behind us
Footprints in the sands of time

Of hewn stones the sacred circle
Where the wizened sages sat
Let us try to remember
All the times where they were at

So your thoughts, they were expecting
Assault and battery on the human anatomy,
Assault and battery on the human anatomy, man

Overall Meaning

The opening verse of Hawkwind's song "Assault and Battery" is a direct reference to Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem "A Psalm of Life." Longfellow's poem urges the reader to make the most out of life and leave a lasting impact on the world. The opening verse serves as a call to action for the listener to make their life sublime and leave behind a positive legacy, just as the great men of the past did. The reference to "footprints in the sands of time" is a metaphor for leaving a lasting impact on the world that will be remembered long after the individual is gone.

The second verse shifts to a scene of a sacred circle where "wizened sages" once sat. The phrase "hewn stones" also alludes to ancient, megalithic structures like Stonehenge. This verse encourages the listener to reflect on the wisdom of the past and to remember where great minds have gathered before. The final verse then takes a darker turn, as the lyrics describe an expected "assault and battery on the human anatomy." This could be interpreted as a reference to violence, either by an individual or as a societal illness.

Overall, "Assault and Battery" encourages listeners to reflect on the importance of making a positive impact on the world, while also recognizing the struggles and challenges that can come with this pursuit.

And so I come full circle; in the mid 1970s I discovered Hawkwind while I was in college, a few years later I started working in a local factory, and here 45-some-odd years later I still know every single note and sound of the albums that brought me so much joy. I am in my final few months before retirement from that factory. Hawkwind was a gateway into exploring so much music, so many bands, as well as my own talents and gifts. I sit here awash with memories from a life I count well-lived. Welcome to the best parts of the soundtrack of my life. And now to sleep--perchance to dream--oh, what a brave new world, that has such music in it...

I never get tired of this song's intro. It sounds like you're flying through an empty void at a 100,000 mph.
