Overall Meaning

The song "Hassan I Sabha" by Hawkwind contains a series of obscure references that seem to relate to a medieval Middle Eastern setting. The lyrics mention the use of hashish by a group of people, the Hashishin, who may be a reference to the Assassins, a secretive Islamic sect from the 11th to 13th centuries. The song also refers to Black September, a Palestinian militant organization active in the 1970s, and the petrol dollar, a term used to refer to the money generated by oil exports in the Middle East.

The lyrics seem to be both celebratory of Middle Eastern culture and critical of Western imperialism, particularly the dependence on oil as a source of wealth and power. The repeated line "Death unto all infidels in oil" suggests that the West's thirst for oil has caused great harm to the Middle East and its people. The reference to the genie of the smoke may also be interpreted as a critique of Western drug culture, which has contributed to the exploitation of Middle Eastern countries.
