Begging to You
Heather Myles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I left you this mornin', couldn't take any more.
You laughed and you dared me to walk out the door.
You said that I'd come back, you knew what I'd do.
An' you know you were right, I'm back here tonight,
Begging to you.

I won't disappoint you; I'm beggin' to stay.
Isn't that what you wanted to hear anyway?
It must make you happy to make me so blue.
What a pitiful sight, I must be tonight,
Begging to you.

You don't want my lovin' though you let me hang around.
I guess just to walk on so you won't touch the ground.

To you, it don't matter what you cause me to do,
As long as you keep me begging to you.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Heather Myles's song "You" evoke the heart-wrenching experience of returning to a toxic relationship, despite knowing it's not healthy for oneself. The song portrays a cycle of giving too much, being disregarded, and then returning for more neglect.

The opening line, "I left you this morning, couldn't take anymore," sets the tone for the desire to break free from an unhealthy relationship. However, the partner's mocking tone and presumption that the singer will return illustrate the hold the partner has over her.

The singer seems aware of her own folly, as she sings, "What a pitiful sight, I must be tonight, begging to you." Yet even while acknowledging her precarious emotional state, the pull of the toxic relationship is stronger.

The chorus of the song, "As long as you keep me begging to you," encapsulates the idea that the partner has the power in the relationship, and the singer can't help but be drawn back into the cycle repeatedly.

Overall, Heather Myles's poignant lyrics in "You" explore the complexities of toxic relationships and the emotional toll they can take on individuals, even when they know they need to walk away.

Heather Myles is one of the finest true country singers of the last thirty years. I purchased my first album by Heather "Just Like Old Times" in 1992 and have been a fan ever since. My favourite album however, is "Highways and Honky Tonks" which is a classic with Dwight Yoakam's brilliant guitarist Pete Anderson fronting an incredible band. Heather wrote ten of the twelve tracks on the album, which proved that she was not just a great singer, but a talented songwriter as well. Merle Haggard even showed up to duet with her on one of the album's songs, (it's on YouTube)and Merle recognized talent when he heard it. It is a shame she never received the fame that she deserved. Country music was being watered down into "pop" music, and real country artists like Heather could not get onto country radio. It has been a while since Heather released any albums. Hopefully she might get signed to a record label and give her many fans some new material.
