Despite his personal struggles, he rose up during the 70's, the heyday of Salsa. He performed in sold out nightclubs, stadiums, and in some of the most prestigious concert halls. His recordings garnered him many awards and gold albums. His musical success is attributed to his extraordinary lyrical improvisations. His unique salsa flavor has remained without rival. Sadly, due to his losing battle with addiction to heroin, it played havoc with his career. There was a suicide attempt and ultimately he died from AIDS.
"El Cantante" (The Singer), a biopic based on Hector Lavoe's life, was releaded in 2006. Jennifer Lopez, who produced the film, also plays the role of one of his wives Puchi, while Marc Anthony portrays the ill-fated lead role.

Me siento tan alegre junto, junto a mi madrecita
Otro igual no encontrará
Héctor Lavoe's song Consejo De Oro tells the story of the struggles and hardships of the singer's life. He starts by describing how he was just a boy when his father passed away, leaving him and his mother with nothing but poverty and misery. They had to eat stale and hard bread while crying for their continuous suffering. Lavoe talks about how they survived by his mother washing the clothes of others just so they would have enough money to get by. He then talks about how in his youth, he left the right path and turned towards alcohol and women. Eventually, he was imprisoned, and he has been left alone by everyone except his mother, who still waits for him, with a demacrado rostro, to come home.
The chorus of the song emphasizes how his mother is everything to him, and he wants to make up for everything he has done to her. He advises younger people to take care of their mothers, as they are the most valuable people in one's life, and they only realize this once they have lost them. The song's central message is about the importance of treating your mother well, regardless of what you have gone through or how misguided you are.
