Henry King and his Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

For I'm dancing with tears in my eyes
'Cause the girl in my arms isn't you,
Dancing with somebody new
When it's you that my hearts calling to

Trying to smile, once in a while,
But I find it so hard to do.
For I'm dancing with tears in my eyes,
'Cause the girl in my arms isn't you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Henry King and his Orchestra's song "Dancing with My Shadow" speaks of a man who is dancing with someone new but his heart belongs to someone else. He is dancing with tears in his eyes because he is reminded of the girl who is not with him. The man is trying to put on a brave face and smile for his new partner, but he finds it hard to do. This shows that he is still in love with the girl who is not with him and he cannot forget about her even while dancing with someone else. The lyrics in this song show how powerful and consuming love can be, making it hard to let go of the person we truly love.

Furthermore, the man is so devoted to the girl he loves that even in the midst of dancing with someone else, his heart is still calling out for her. The song portrays how hard it is to move on and how memories can taint even the most innocuous of activities. It shows how a broken heart can keep one stranded in the past, even when trying to move on. Overall, the song is a powerful depiction of the pain of unrequited or lost love.

Henry is the second of three bandleaders named King listed in Leo Walker's Big Band Almanac in between Al and Wayne. Henry started probably early 1930s in NYC. He recorded for Columbia and 3 other labels. He played in hotels in big cities across the US and often made live radio broadcasts from them.
