Herbert began creating music with found objects whilst at Exeter University (UK) in the 1990s, where he studied Drama. From bottles, books, and pepper pots he progressed to recording places and experiences, effectively using the sampler as an instrument on many of his Doctor Rockit and Herbert releases. This style evolved into the overtly political when he began sampling objects from McDonald's and The Gap as a protest against corporate globalism on the The Mechanics Of Destruction album. The CD was distributed free at concerts and available as a free download and has never been available in stores.
His 2003 Big Band album, Goodbye Swingtime combined the political commentary of Radioboy with the song structure of his Herbert albums. Recorded with sixteen musicians from the British jazz world, including saxophonists Dave O'Higgins and Nigel Hitchcock and bassist Dave Green, the band is complemented on stage by long-term vocal partner Dani Siciliano and occasionally Arto Lindsay and Warp recording artist, Jamie Lidell. Recently he has provided music for a number of films, including Dogme director Kristian Levring's The Intended along with original music for TV. Herbert's newest album Plat du Jour addresses world famine.
I Got the Music

I've got you deep in the heart of me.
So deep in my heart that you're really a part of me.
I've got you under my skin.
I'd tried so not to give in.
I said to myself, this affair never will go so well.
But why should I try to resist when, baby, I know down well
I've got you under my skin?
I'd sacrifice anything come what might
For the sake of havin' you near
In spite of a warnin' voice that comes in the night
And repeats, repeats in my ear,
Don't you know, you fool, you never can win?
Use your mentality, wake up to reality.
But each time that I do just the thought of you
Makes me stop before I begin
Cause I've got you under my skin.
I would sacrifice anything come what might
For the sake of havin' you near
In spite of the warning voice that comes in the night
And repeats, how it yells in my ear,
Don't you know, you fool, ain't no chance to win
Why not use your mentality, get up, wake up to reality?
And each time I do just the thought of you
Makes me stop just before I begin
Cause I've got you under my skin.
And I like you under my skin.
The song "I Got You Under My Skin" by Cole Porter has been covered by several other artists, including Frank Sinatra, who made it a hit in 1956. The lyrics of the song are about being deeply in love with someone and having that person become a part of you. The phrase "I've got you under my skin" suggests that the person is so deeply embedded in the singer's thoughts and feelings that they can't shake them off no matter how hard they try.
The opening lines of the song "I've got you under my skin, I've got you deep in the heart of me" suggest the depth of the singer's feelings for the person they're talking about. The phrase "I've got you under my skin" is repeated several times throughout the song, emphasizing the inescapable nature of the singer's love for this person. The singer seems to have tried to resist these feelings, as suggested by the line "I tried so not to give in," but ultimately gives in to their love.
The lines "Use your mentality, wake up to reality" suggest that the singer knows that their love may not be practical or realistic. However, they can't help the way they feel and are willing to sacrifice anything to be near this person. The repeated warning voice that comes to the singer in the night suggests that they are aware of the potential consequences of their love, but they are willing to take the risk.

Got my tweed pressed
Got my best vest
All I need now is the boy
Got my striped tie
Got my hopes high
Got the time and the place and I got rhythm
Now all I need is Chris to go with em’
If he’ll just appear we’ll fill this big town full of joy
And if he’ll say “my darling I’m yours” I’ll throw away my
Striped tie and my best pressed tweed all I really need is a boy!
