Herbert began creating music with found objects whilst at Exeter University (UK) in the 1990s, where he studied Drama. From bottles, books, and pepper pots he progressed to recording places and experiences, effectively using the sampler as an instrument on many of his Doctor Rockit and Herbert releases. This style evolved into the overtly political when he began sampling objects from McDonald's and The Gap as a protest against corporate globalism on the The Mechanics Of Destruction album. The CD was distributed free at concerts and available as a free download and has never been available in stores.
His 2003 Big Band album, Goodbye Swingtime combined the political commentary of Radioboy with the song structure of his Herbert albums. Recorded with sixteen musicians from the British jazz world, including saxophonists Dave O'Higgins and Nigel Hitchcock and bassist Dave Green, the band is complemented on stage by long-term vocal partner Dani Siciliano and occasionally Arto Lindsay and Warp recording artist, Jamie Lidell. Recently he has provided music for a number of films, including Dogme director Kristian Levring's The Intended along with original music for TV. Herbert's newest album Plat du Jour addresses world famine.

Keep your voice low
Shut your phone off
So they won't know
Anything, anything at all
Anything, anything at all
I'll go right
Baby, you can stay left
So they won't suspect
Anything, anything at all
Anything, anything at all
Alright my dear goodbye for now
I'll meet you here when the lights go out
We're quietly in love
Quietly in love
Quietly in love
Yeah yeah
Just relax baby
We'll be fine
Cover your tracks so
They won't find
Anything, anything at all
Anything, anything at all
I'll go right
Baby, you can stay left
No don't be nervous
No they won't connect
Anything, anything at all
Anything, anything at all
Alright my dear goodbye for now
I'll meet you here when the lights go out
So listen close when you hear this sound
You have to get to me before we're found
We're quietly in love
Quietly in love
Quietly in love
Yeah yeah
Anything, anything at all
Anything, anything at all
Anything, anything at all
Anything, anything at all
We're quietly in love
Quietly in love
Quietly in love
Yeah yeah
Anything, anything at all
We're quietly in love
Quietly in love
Quietly in love
Yeah yeah
Anything, anything at all
In "We're In Love," Herbert emphasizes secrecy and discretion in a romantic relationship. The lyrics suggest that the couple must keep their love hidden from others, possibly due to societal or external pressures. The lines "Keep your hood up, keep your voice low, shut your phone off so they won't know" imply the need for the lovers to hide their affection and maintain a low profile.
The song conveys a sense of urgency and fear of being discovered: "Cover your tracks so they won't find, no don't be nervous, no they won't connect." These lyrics imply that the couple is going to great lengths to avoid suspicion and ensure their love remains a secret. The repeated phrase "Anything at all" emphasizes the importance of not divulging any information about their relationship.
The chorus "We're quietly in love" reinforces the idea that the couple's love is being kept hidden, underscoring the need for secrecy and caution. The line "I'll meet you here when the lights go out" suggests that they can only freely express their love in private, away from prying eyes.
Overall, "We're In Love" explores the challenges and sacrifices of being in a clandestine relationship, weaving a tale of devotion and the lengths one will go to keep love hidden.
