Herbie Mann was born in Brooklyn, New York. Early in his career, he played saxophone and clarinet, but Mann was among the first jazz musicians to specialize on the flute and was perhaps jazz music's preminent flautist during the 1960s.

Mann was quite prolific and performed often. His first gig was playing in the Catskills at age 15. His last, on May 3, 2003 was at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival at age 73. Herbie Mann died at age 73 on July 1, 2003 of prostate cancer.

Everytime I listen to this I have to wipe off a tear or two! An extremely rare find these days! So mellow and tender as only Herbie Mann knew how to blow on a flute! Some 20 years ago I managed to grab hold of a vinyl album by HM (Muscle Shoals Nitty Gritty) with this on - after years of searching and hunting! Some kinds of music will just never die!

The genius of Herbie Mann on flute i'm sure,will never be equalled.

This bluesy piece is what HAS made Herb the master craftsman of flute possibilities.

It has made him, in my opinion, an able-bodied lead woodwind instrumentalist on flutes.

Haven't heard this piece in 47-years - and more. In fact, before I embrace the noble art of flute-playing, I heard both my musically self-opinionated brother's and his flutist friend's, Mr. Keith Waithe's toying around with this beautiful ballad which Herbie Mann has so well "sculpted".

let's hear "A Whiter Shade Of Pale" by Mr. Mann; shall we not?

@music1831 No, I haven't heard 'Baia' by Herbie. There is so much of timeless music out there but today's challenge is laying hands on it. I once listened to an online sample of Herbie's rendition of 'A Whiter Shade of Pale' (Procol Harum's 1967 masterpiece) and every hair on my body stood on edge. A whole array of AWSoP versions were on display but have since been taken off. No clue what album the hit was issued on. How sad!
