Hear my cry oh God
Attend unto my prayer
From the ends of the earth
From the ends of the earth
Will I cry unto thee
When my heart is overwhelmed
Lead me to that rock
Lead me to that rock
That is higher than I
For Thou has been
For Thou has been
A shelter for me
A mighty strong tower
From the enemy
When my heart is overwhelmed
When my heart is overwhelmed
Lead me to that Rock
Lead me to that Rock
That is higher than I
Lead me to that rock
Lead me to that rock
That is higher is higher than I
The lyrics of Hezekiah Walker's "Lead Me To That Rock" is a poetic expression that cries out to God in times of distress, seeking His intervention and providence as a means of finding solace from the troubles of life. The words "Hear my cry, O God, attend unto my prayer," suggest that the writer of the song is in a state of desperation and has exhausted all human means of finding help. He then turns to God, the Almighty who is not limited by the constraints of the earth, for divine assistance.
The repetition of the phrase "From the ends of the earth, will I cry unto thee" advocates the power of prayer and how it can reach the ears of God, no matter the distance. The writer reaffirms his faith in God by acknowledging Him as a "shelter" and a "mighty strong tower" from the enemy. This portrayal indicates that the writer believes that God alone can provide the help he needs, as he is incapable of doing it alone.
The climax of the song is when the writer pleads with God to "Lead me to that rock that is higher than I" as a way to find refuge from overwhelming circumstances. The rock in this context represents God as a safe haven and refuge for those who put their trust in Him. The song "Lead Me To That Rock" portrays faith in the midst of tribulation and how it can bring deliverance and help.
