Deal
Hospital Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

it's not a big deal
but when you close your eyes
you see an old road and you try to summarize
your past and future and distance in between
forever young but
forever in a dream

you walk out just to hear the song of blackbirds in the sky
and it still reminds you
how the purple sky was glowing and the city lit the lights
and it overflows you
and you are trying
and you are trying to deny it

it's not a secret
that right before the dawn
the clouds are darker
and all the stars fall down
you sit and wait for your time to catch the sun
to face the wind and refill
what's been and gone

you walk out just to hear the song of blackbirds in the sky
and it still reminds you
how the purple sky was glowing and the city lit the lights
and it overflows you

and you are trying
and you are trying to deny it

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Hospital's song "Deal" explore themes of reflection, nostalgia, and denial. The song suggests that while the singer may downplay their emotions or experiences as not being a big deal, they are still deeply affected by them. The first paragraph conveys a sense of introspection, as the singer reflects on their past, present, and the space in between. They feel perpetually young but simultaneously trapped in a dream-like state.

In the second paragraph, the mention of blackbirds in the sky symbolizes a moment of escape. The singer walks out to hear their song, yearning for a connection to nature and its unaltered beauty. This reminder of the past, when the sky was purple and the city lights glowed, overwhelms them. Despite their efforts, they struggle to deny the impact it has on them, hinting at a longing or desire for that time to return.

The third paragraph touches on the idea of a transition or a new beginning that precedes the dawn. The darker clouds and falling stars symbolize a moment of uncertainty and change. The singer waits for their moment to catch the sun, indicating a desire for renewal and rejuvenation. They also mention facing the wind, suggesting a willingness to confront challenges and overcome what has passed.

The final lines of the song depict the singer once again seeking solace in the song of the blackbirds. This melody continues to remind them of the vibrant past and the overwhelming emotions that it stirs within them. Despite their attempts to deny or suppress their feelings, the intensity of these emotions overflows and cannot be completely ignored. This hint of denial suggests a struggle to fully acknowledge or face the weight of the past, implying a potential fear of confronting their true emotions. Overall, the lyrics convey a deep longing for connection to significant moments in the past and a struggle to accept and process the impact these have had on the singer's present and future.

I see some people wearing N-95 under surgical masks, but maybe they're conserving them or only wearing them when tending directly for patients.
