State of Grace
Hot Water Music Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh, I for one may not shy,
Away from the fact that I'm sick,
And too tired to stand this,
It all seems contagious.
I know a few would back that up,
Can't say a few is not enough,
To skip a beat in this motion sickness.
I'd second that emotion.

Our state,
Our state,
Our state of grace is gone.
Our state,
Our state,
Our state of grace is gone.

Oh, I for one don't want to die,
Old and in the way from poison.
'Cause I hate the taste of medicine,
We all hate the taste of medicine.
I know a few would back that up,
Can't say a few is not enough,
To skip a beat in this motion sickness.
I'd second that emotion.

Our state,
Our state,
Our state of grace is gone.
Our state,
Our state,
Our state of grace is gone away.

Our state of grace is crumbling,
I fear we're good for nothing,
And simply disintegrating into the terra firma.

Our state,
Our state,
Our state of grace is gone.
Our state,
Our state,
Our state of grace is gone.
May we combine tradition,
Science and innovation.

To benefit what's ailing,
Our state of grace is gone.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Hot Water Music's song State of Grace capture the feelings of exhaustion and hopelessness that come with trying to navigate a world that feels broken beyond repair. The opening lines speak to a desire to face reality head-on, even if that means admitting that things are not okay ("Oh, I for one may not shy, away from the fact that I'm sick"). The repetition of "motion sickness" throughout the song helps to create a sense of vertigo or disorientation, as though the world is spinning out of control and there's nothing that can be done to stop it.

The chorus ("Our state, our state, our state of grace is gone") is simple but powerful, driving home the idea that the sense of beauty and order that we associate with grace has vanished. The verses explore this idea further, with lines like "I hate the taste of medicine, we all hate the taste of medicine" capturing the frustration and bitterness that come with feeling as though the only solutions available are unpleasant and unsatisfying.

Despite the bleakness of the song, there's a sense of resilience and determination in the final lines ("May we combine tradition, science and innovation, to benefit what's ailing"). Even if the state of grace is gone, there is still the possibility of finding new ways forward and creating a better world.

Hot Water Music has been one of my favorite bands for 11 years now and I can't ever see that changing. Every song is either amazing or a classic. I don't know any other band that I can say that about.

Rubens

This stuff is still genuine!
Love them since 2000

TheSpearOfThor

It's hard to find music that is this genuine. This is 100.

MegadethMiller

I got into Chuck's music backwards, started with his solo stuff and worked my way back to Hot Water Music, but I really like this stuff.

Ben Duncan

+Thrashmetal6666 Yep, same here, I actually had no idea he was in HWM (had heard Trusty Chords but that's it) until my buddy told me and the more I listen to them the more I like them. Chuck has one of the best voices in punk in my opinion.

huludicidal

Fuel For The Hate Game to Caution, all gold. Enjoy. This band is a punk rock gem, along with Propaghandi.

Rogue Planet

Haha me too. Me too

ChattaYakFish

Same!! A friend is Savannah, GA tried to get me into to alkaline trio and hot water music back in ‘04 but I wasn’t having it. Found Chuck Ragan through fly fishing in. 2019 and now he is my lord and savior. Going to see hot water music Saturday 2/26/22 in ATL.

Yes, I didn’t capitalize anything.

theavenged

16 years later, Chuck's still got it.

Crip Tell

Been listening to this band for about 15 years. I still love their music as much as the first time I heard them. In my top 5. Great stuff.
