Perfect Time of Day
Howie Day Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

[Verse 1:]
It's the perfect time of day
It's the last day of your life
Don't let it drift away
While your heart is still racing
It's the perfect time of day

[Chorus:]
And you won't feel a thing
And you won't recall anything at all

[Verse 2:]
Close your eyes and take your last breath
Press your head aside, the end is the beginning
Everyone between is so lost, so lost.

[Chorus]

[Bridge:]
Let your colors collide
The time is so right
I keep running behind
But I know your meaning
You love to fall
(...)
The perfect time of day

[Chorus]

[Outro:]
Wooooo it's the perfect time of day
Come on now

It's the perfect time of day
it's the perfect time with you

Overall Meaning

The song 'Perfect Time of Day' by Howie Day has a melancholic undertone and deeply introspective lyrics, urging listeners to seize each moment before it slips away. The first verse sets a somber tone, with the singer emphasizing on how this is the last day of your life and it shouldn't be wasted. The chorus reinforces the notion that we should live life to the fullest, without any regrets. The second verse is an invitation to let go of all inhibitions and surrender to the moment. The bridge is a call to let your true self shine through and embrace your individuality while the outro leaves us with a hopeful feeling that it's indeed possible to make the most of every day, especially when spent with loved ones.

The overall theme of the song is one of making the most of the precious time we have on this planet, and living our lives to the fullest. The lyrics urge the listener to take risks and live in the moment, rather than worrying about what the future holds. This song has a message that is both prophetic and inspiring, and is a reminder to us all that time waits for no one, and it is up to us to make the most of what we have. While the lyrics can be interpreted in a number of ways, the central message of the song is clear: life is a gift that we must cherish and not waste.

I heard this song on the last day of my brothers life. We didn’t know it at the time. A family member bought me this album for my birthday.

My brother got into an accident on my birthday. The family member gave me this at the hospital a few days later. I heard this song while waiting on an update from my brothers scans/tests. It was the last song I heard before I learned that he would not be capable of living without machines.

The perfect time of day (to hear the song) the last day of your life (brother) and you won’t feel a thing (because you’re already gone) and you won’t recall, anything at all (because your brain stopped working days ago)

Close your eyes and take your last breath (because we pulled the plug and you couldn’t sustain yourself. I watched you fight a losing battle and heave for air)

....

The end is the beginning and every point between. Some are lost. Oh. Some are lost. (Because the end of your life brought me and our brother back to square one. How to escape the abuse? We had a plan with you, but without you all was lost for us. You were the oldest. Our savior. Our best friend. Our last hope. We had to revisit all our past trauma and the death of our hopes and dreams without you.)

....

And you won’t feel a thing. And you won’t recall anything at all. (A lifetime of pain and struggle is over for you now. Go find peace. )

Let your colors collide. Oh the time is so fleeting. (You had so much potential. I wish I appreciated you more. I wish you had a better life. It was far too short.)

I quit running behind. Oh I know your meaning. (You taught me to fight for myself. Through your life and your death .)

You look too far for what you want to say (you still had so much guidance left to give but didn’t quite know how. You were careful with how you told us things, to protect us.)

And you look for the perfect time of day (the last letter you left me said you knew there was never a good time and you’d come back as soon as you could. You fought through that last week of your life. Maybe for us. Maybe purely on instinct. I’ll never know.)

And you won’t feel a thing. (I hope you went peacefully, without pain. Because it didn’t look that way. It didn’t sound that way..)

And you won’t recall anything at all (if you didn’t go peacefully, I hope you don’t remember that suffering after your physical life ended)

its a beautiful thing to share. my brother was shot by the police in a likely suicide by cop incident. but it was weird, because his girlfriend said don't come in he has a bb gun. but the cop did not listen to her. it took me a decade plus to look up the news story to here the cop claim by brother raised the gun. i have been sharing about his death a lot more with BLM. i always though man, if my brother were English, he would be alive

I wish i had a better life too. it seems to me, that everything which makes life worthwhile , is damn near difficult for me to obtain- most of the time it fails. Sorry about your brother- but he is in a far better place than any of the living will ever know.

Omg, same here but it was my 19 yr old son in an auto accident. Weird how music can bring you right back to another time, over a decade later and it's still fresh. Thoughts are with you. 🙏

I still never understood why this didn't get a single release. I think this would have been great as a radio edit, certainly for 2003 anyway.

This song literally was the first song I heard in the parking lot of the hospital that I said good bye to my brother. I know it's an amazing song to begin with! But man! What a beautiful song!
