Feather
Hugo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Moving through city streets
with nothing but my name.
Don't care what the neighbors say
becuase I do the walk of shame.
Oh, my sisters tried to warn me,
but it really can't be that bad.
They say all I'm gonna be is
just another feather in your hat.
I know you got history,
but I ain't been no saint.
Just want a little part of me
in every picture that you paint.
No, I find a way to reach you,
just tell me what time and where at.
Cuz, baby all you're gonna be
is just another feather in my hat.
Once I had a little taste
and felt that bitter chill.
She said the rules have changed
And I should have known the deal.
Oh, I really can't believe it,
I feel like I've been had.
I guess that's just what you get
when you become a feather in a hat.
I guess that's just what you get
when you become a feather in a hat.
I've been warned,
I've been told,
I should have known,
I gotta find out on my own.
They say all I'm gonna be
is just another feather in your hat.
They say all I'm gonna be
is just another feather in your hat.

They say all I'm gonna be
is just another feather in your hat.

Overall Meaning

In "Feather," Hugo describes the fear of being just another conquest for someone, while still willing to take the risk. The song is about a man who is aware of the potential danger of becoming involved with a heartbreaker, but because he is so enticed by her, he is willing to take the risk anyway. The man is confident that he can handle the situation even though his sisters have tried to warn him. The singer is driven by possessiveness, a need to be a part of something bigger and more glamorous than his current life. This desire trumps any warnings or cries of caution from those around him. Throughout the song, Hugo conveys the internal struggle the singer faces, vacillating between confidence and self-doubt.

In the first verse, Hugo sets the scene of a man moving through city streets without anything but his name. He seems to be somewhat of a wanderer, not tied down to anything, and not concerned with what the neighbors think of him. He's going through a moment of walk of shame, for perhaps spending the night with someone he shouldn't have. He confesses that his sister had warned him about the woman in question, but he doesn't seem too concerned about her advice. The singer sees the potential danger that lies ahead but suppresses his fear and decides to take the risk anyway. He is driven by his desire to be a part of something bigger and more glamorous than his current life.

In the second verse, he expresses his fear of becoming one of many feathers in her hat. He recognizes that she has a history and isn't necessarily the kind of woman that settles down. However, he's willing to become a part of her life in some way, even if it's just a tiny part of something larger. He pleads with her, asking for a way to reach her, confessing that he's open to whatever time and place is convenient for her. The singer is willing to risk being just another feather in her cap just to have a chance to be a part of her life.

Overall, "Feather" tells the story of a man willing to risk it all, for a chance to be a part of something extraordinary, even if that means becoming just another feather in her hat.
