Indovina and Human Drama began their career in New Orleans in the early 80s as The Models, releasing two singles along with compilation appearances. A mid-'80s move to Los Angeles and the discovery of an already existing Australian band also named The Models set the stage for Indovina and company to begin their new incarnation.
The newly renamed Human Drama became a member of the "Scream scene" of the mid-'80s, which sprang up around the short-lived Los Angeles underground goth/metal club that brought Guns N' Roses and Jane's Addiction to the world. Human Drama contributed a song, "Wave of Darkness", to the 1987 Scream Compilation LP, which led to a major label deal with RCA.
1989 saw the release of the debut Hopes Prayers Dreams Heart Soul Mind Love Life Death EP and the full length Feel LP. Both releases featured a electric guitar-oriented approach. Indovina felt that RCA wasn't properly promoting the band, and the band and label parted ways.
Moving to the independent Triple X label, the next Human Drama release was 1992's The World Inside. Stylistically different from the first two releases, Indovina moved Human Drama into a quieter, more strings-based sound. This album is widely regarded as Indovina and Human Drama's most important work. The LP earned the band critical raves and a near fanatical following, especially in Mexico. A solo performance of various cover songs by Indovina at the album's release party predicted the next Human Drama album. Released in 1993, PinUps was an open tribute to David Bowie's album of the same name, a collection of remakes of various sources of inspiration.
A move to New York city accompanied a temporary co-release stint on the Projekt label, resulting in two additional mid-decade releases, 1994's Human Drama EP and 1995's Songs of Betrayal, which was later re-released as two separate discs with additional tracks.
The next Human Drama release would be a live album. 1997's Fourteen Thousand Three Hundred Eighty Four Days Later, featuring many of the early Feel-era songs, along with some new cover song choices.
1999 brought Solemn Sun Setting, which saw a merging of the two "different" Human Drama styles, before the following year's career overview, Best of Human Drama...In a Perfect World.
The final Human Drama album, 2002's Cause and Effect, continuing themes from Solemn Sun Setting, was an unexpected goodbye from Indovina and company, for both the band and their fans.
In 2004, Human Drama recorded their final track, the Beatles "Let It Be", which was given to fans who attended the band's farewell performance in Los Angeles. When asked why he chose "Let It Be" as their final recording Indovina answered, "I strived my entire career to write a song as good as that, but since I couldn't, I decided to record it as a salute to, what is in my opinion, the best song ever written".
Indovina has since moved on with his next project, Sound of the Blue Heart.

Though you hear every word,
Though you hear every word
Sometimes it's hard to hear
Even your own words
Even your own words
And sometimes it's hard to know
It's hard to know it
Play confused, play a role
As long as no one knows
As no one knows it
I'll pretend
To forget
To let go
To forgive
Something lies
Behind the truth
Behind my eyes
I think I'll let it through
Sometimes it's hard to love
Sometimes easier to run,
Sometimes easier to run
But you can never run so far
To escape love
You never escape real love
I'll pretend
To forget
To let go
To forgive
Something lies
Behind the truth
Behind my eyes
I think I'll let it through
Sometimes it's hard to trust
Even harder
To admit it
Sometimes it's hard to forget
Sometimes though you find a way
Then one day you realize
You can never forget
I'll pretend
To forget
To let go
To forgive
Something lies
Behind the truth
Behind my eyes
I think I'll let it through
The lyrics of Human Drama's song "Sometimes" delve into the complexities and challenges of human emotions and relationships. In four long paragraphs, let's explore the meaning behind these lyrics.
The first paragraph highlights the struggle of truly hearing and understanding what someone is saying. It suggests that even when we hear every word, there are times when it's difficult to truly comprehend the message or meaning behind those words.
The second paragraph continues this theme, but shifts the focus inward. It conveys the idea that sometimes it's even harder to hear and understand our own thoughts and feelings. It implies that self-awareness can be elusive and introspection can be challenging.
The third paragraph delves into the difficulty of feeling and knowing one's emotions. It suggests that sometimes it's hard to truly grasp our own emotional state or understand the emotions of others. This line captures the struggles of navigating the complexities of human emotions.
The fourth paragraph shifts gears and explores the concept of pretending and playing a role to hide one's true feelings or thoughts. It implies that sometimes we pretend to be someone we're not, as long as nobody knows the truth about our inner world. It captures the struggle of maintaining appearances while feeling disconnected from our true selves.
The chorus, "I'll pretend to forget, to let go, to forgive" represents the singer's attempt to deceive themselves by pretending to move on from a situation. This line highlights the struggles of letting go of the past and finding forgiveness, suggesting that it's not as easy as simply pretending.
The next verse digs deeper into the internal conflict within the singer's mind. It mentions that there is something hidden behind the truth and behind their eyes. It suggests that the singer is wrestling with suppressed emotions or secrets that they are contemplating whether to let out or keep hidden.
The following verse explores the complexity of love and running away from it. It implies that at times, it's easier to run away from love rather than confront its challenges. However, the lyrics remind us that love cannot be escaped; it will always catch up with us. This verse highlights the difficulty of dealing with love's complexity, but also emphasizes its inevitability.
The final verse touches upon the struggle of trust and the difficulty of admitting our own insecurities and vulnerabilities. It suggests that it can be hard to trust others and even harder to admit that we struggle with this. It also acknowledges that forgetting is not always possible, even though we may try to find a way to do so.
The repeated chorus reinforces the theme of pretending, letting go, and forgiving. It suggests that the singer is attempting to convince themselves to move on from their past, but there is still something lingering behind the truth and behind their eyes that they are considering revealing or confronting.
Overall, these lyrics encapsulate the complex nature of human emotions and relationships. They portray the struggles of self-awareness, understanding others, letting go, forgiving, and trusting, while acknowledging the difficulty in truly escaping our emotions and the truths that lie hidden within us.
