Love Is
INXS Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

This is ?
Food of love
That they said
Got it wrong
Smiling
You and I
Thinking
Never see it die

What I say now
What I say now
I don't think we know each other
Enough to lie
Enough is enough anyway

These changes
Lives alone
Drowning
By the fire
Out of dearth
He becomes
Man without
Qualities

What I say now
What I say now
I don't think we know each other
Enough to lie
Enough is enough anyway

This love
Food of love
They said
Got it wrong
Smiling
You and I
Thinking
Never see it die

What I say now
What I say now
I don't think we know each other
Enough to lie
Enough is enough anyway

You and I
What I say

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of INXS's song "Love Is" describe the discrepancy between common beliefs about love being the "food of love" and how it really is in reality. The singer suggests that what people commonly believe about love is not entirely accurate, suggesting that "they got it wrong." The lyrics also address the idea of lying in a relationship, saying that the singer and their partner do not know each other well enough to lie. The song seems to imply that honesty is essential for a healthy, lasting relationship.

The second verse introduces the theme of change as the singer describes "these changes, lives alone." The lyrics suggest a feeling of being overwhelmed by these changes, as the singer feels like they are drowning. The phrase "man without qualities" suggests a sense of identity crisis, feeling as though he has lost himself in the changes occurring in his life.

Despite these challenges, the chorus repeats the idea that love cannot die, smiling and thinking that it will never fade away. However, the final line once again emphasizes honesty, suggesting that "enough is enough anyway." The repetition of the phrase "what I say now" throughout the song adds a sense of urgency, as though the singer is struggling to convey their thoughts and feelings coherently.

Overall, the lyrics of "Love Is" suggest a complex view of love, acknowledging that it can be both powerful and challenging. The song emphasizes the importance of honesty in a relationship and suggests that even though love may not always be what we expect, it is still worth pursuing.

Looking back at the 80's you have to give it up to INXS for the shear volume of amazing hits spanning all of their albums it's a crime they are not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame...

@jijimcc518

They are in the Australian Hall of Fame and that's all that counts.

@marknroses

Absolutely. Their 1990s stuff was great Genre-breaking stuff too!

@davidhefner2010

Well, no question about that.
But Shaboo Shabah, the.swing, and kick to me are masterpieces and possibly X
(I just know the entire album)
